May is Better Hearing and Speech Month and a great time to check your hearing health. Hearing loss affects more than 36 million Americans. If you have trouble hearing conversations in a noisy environment, frequently ask people to repeat themselves or have ringing or buzzing in your ears, you may have hearing loss. The OSU Department of Otolaryngology is offering free hearing screenings Tuesday (5/14) and Wednesday (5/15). No appointment necessary.

Headline news

World renowned oncology surgeon recruited to Ohio State

 Raphael E. Pollock, known and respected worldwide as a gifted cancer surgeon and researcher and passionate educator of physicians-in-training, will become a professor and the director of the Division of Surgical Oncology in the Wexner Medical Center College of Medicine, Department of Surgery. Pollock will also serve as the chief of surgical services of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. His appointment is effective Sept. 1.  He comes to Ohio State after 31 years at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he held several leadership roles, the most recent being chief of surgery.

Commencement information available

Ohio State's May 5 commencement ceremony — including President Barack Obama's address to graduates — will be available via a live video stream. The stream begins at noon. Watch: commencement.osu.edu/video.html. Excerpts from the ceremony also will be broadcast on WOSU-TV May 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Traffic/parking alert

Marathon to impact streets near campus May 4

The Capital City Half Marathon will take place on Saturday (5/4) rom approximately 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Due to the running of the race near campus, several streets in the area, including portions of Lane Avenue, High Street, and Olentangy River Road, will be closed at various times throughout the race. Motorists may experience traffic delays while traveling to and from campus.

Patterson Lecture features Kellogg Foundation president

The 10th Annual James F. Patterson Land-Grant University Lecture, featuring Sterling Speirn, president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, is today (5/2) from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Ohio Union, Performance Hall.  Steven Amstrup, 2012 winner of the world’s top wildlife conservation prize, will speak on Tuesday (5/14) at the Environmental Professionals Network breakfast at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center at OSU. Dean of Nicholas School of the Environment to give keynote

Registration is now open for an engaging and enlightening symposium, “The Evolving Role of the School of Environment and Natural Resources: Addressing Environmental Change” to be held Tuesday (5/21) from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Nationwide and Farm Bureau 4-H Center. Bill Chameides, dean, Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University will deliver the keynote address. Analyzing sustainability in Ohio’s food supply chain workshop

Faculty and researchers are invited to attend this one-day workshop on Friday (5/31) at 10 a.m. at the Ohio Union. Ruben Morawicki, University of Arkansas and senior advisor to the Sustainability Consortium, will speak on challenges and opportunities from improving sustainability across the supply chain. Break-out sessions include system analysis of food production, local food systems and communicating sustainability. The workshop will bring together Ohio State researchers and leaders from Ohio’s food industry. Attendance is free.

Eye health lunch and learn May 15

Risk factors for myopia and possible ideas about preventing its onset and progression will be presented by Karla Zadnik as part of the Eye Health Lunch and Learn on Wednesday (5/15) from noon-1 p.m. in the Ohio Staters Tradition Room. Myopia, or nearsightedness, affects as many as one in three Americans. It compromises distance vision, prevents individuals from pursuing some careers, and costs an average of $4.6 billion annually.

To celebrate Better Hearing & Speech Month, the OSU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic is offering free hearing screenings to OSU faculty, staff, and their families on Wednesday (5/8), Tuesday (5/14) and Thursday (5/23).
