May is Better Hearing and Speech Month and a great time to check your hearing health. Hearing loss affects more than 36 million Americans. If you have trouble hearing conversations in a noisy environment, frequently ask people to repeat themselves or have ringing or buzzing in your ears, you may have hearing loss. The OSU Department of Otolaryngology is offering free hearing screenings Tuesday (5/14) and Wednesday (5/15). No appointment necessary.

Melnyk hosts Viewpoints of Innovative Healthcare Leaders series

Viewpoints is a new bi-weekly podcast series featuring innovative healthcare leaders discussing today's most important national health and wellness topics. Host Bernadette Melnyk, dean of the College of Nursing and university chief wellness officer, engages innovators from nationally renowned hospitals, healthcare systems, government agencies, foundations and corporations on crucial healthcare issues. The series launched Wednesday (5/1) with its first guest, Richard Carmona, 17th U.S. Surgeon General, Canyon Ranch Institute President, and Dean's Distinguished Professor of Health Promotion and Entrepreneurship at the Ohio State’s College of Nursing.

Commencement: Live streaming, parking info and more

Ohio State's May 5 commencement ceremony — including President Barack Obama's address to graduates — will be available via a live video stream. The stream begins at noon: watch here. Excerpts from the ceremony also will be broadcast on WOSU-TV on Monday (5/6) at 7:30 p.m.

OSU transportation survey

OSU Transportation & Traffic Management and City & Regional Planning invite you to participate in a survey (through May 17) designed to better understand your travel patterns to, from and on-campus. There’s still time to track current YP4H Challenge activities

The challenges that were introduced with the new YP4H web site will be ending soon, but there’s still time to get credit for tracking your healthy activities. By participating in challenges, you can earn points to move through the levels of the YP4H incentive program and earn rewards. After earning the PHA premium credit, additional rewards include a $75 Amazon gift card, FitBitTM (fitness device), and entry into a grand prize. Enrolled spouses/same-sex domestic partners are also eligible to earn incentive program rewards.

Zigmond to speak on exercise and brain health

Michael Zigmond, professor of neurology, neurobiology, and psychiatry at the Pittsburgh Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases will discuss life style and brain health on Friday (5/17) at noon in 106 Meiling Hall. The focus will be on studies on the neuroprotective effects of exercise.

Stroke risk assessments offered in May

A stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Do you know your risk? Free stroke screenings will be offered in May, from 10 a.m-2 p.m. at University Hospital East, Seasons Garden Café Lobby on Thursdays, and Fridays in the Ross Heart Hospital lobby. No appointment is necessary.

Sodroski to present CMIB seminar May 13

As part of its Host-Pathogen Seminar Series, the Center for Microbial Interface Biology is hosting Joseph Sodroski on Monday (5/13) at 4 p.m. in 115 Biomedical Research Tower. Sodroski’s seminar, “Structure and Neutralization of the HIV-1 Envelope Glycoprotein Trimer,” is open to the public. The Host-Pathogen Seminar Series features distinguished national and international scientists in the area of microbe-host interactions.
