Good Day!
WELCOME
TO OSUToday, the latest news and information for faculty and staff of The
Ohio State University for Tuesday, June 5. The deadline for submissions
is noon the prior business day.
OSUToday sponsored by the Wexner Center for the Arts
Don’t miss the visually striking new documentary Manufactured
Landscapes screening at the Wex on Friday and Saturday. Canadian
photographer Edward Burtynsky specializes in large-scale images of seemingly
beautiful but often-toxic industrial landscapes. Manufactured Landscapes'
director Baichwal probes further, investigating how these environments are endured
by their human inhabitants. Cleveland filmmaker Bruce Checefsky's short film Moment
Musical, is a reconstruction of a lost, experimental Polish film from 1933
and screens first. Read

RESEARCHERS
DISCOVER INHERITED MUTATION FOR LEUKEMIA
Researchers at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center have discovered
the first inherited gene mutation that increases a person’s risk
for chronic lymphocytic leukemia, one of the most common forms of the
disease. The study shows that the inherited mutation greatly reduces
the gene’s protective activity. Furthermore, a second kind of
change occurs later that turns the gene off altogether, leading to
leukemia. This latter alteration is a chemical change that is not inherited.
The findings could help identify people at risk for chronic lymphocytic
leukemia, and may lead to new strategies for treating the disease. Read
