Headline newsTURNER HONORED FOR SERVICE TO SPORT MANAGEMENT RESEARCHThe North American Society for Sport Management has named Brian A. Turner, OSU assistant professor of Sport Management, School of Physical Activity and Educational Services, as a Research Fellow. The award is given for making significant scholarly contributions to the Journal of Sport Management, the annual NASSM conference, and other sport management-related academic areas of interest. There are only 33 Research Fellows worldwide, including Ohio State’s Packianathan Chelladurai, Janet Fink and Donna Pastore.
GUEST LECTURE SERIES AT STONE LAB STARTS TODAYOhio State’s Stone Lab on Lake Erie begins its annual summer guest lecture series beginning at 7:45 p.m. today (6/14). Charles Herdendorf, OSU professor emeritus, will present “Geology of the Great Lakes: From Volcanoes to Glaciers.” Lectures will take place every Thursday evening throughout the summer at Stone Lab. WOSU HOSTS COLUMBUS WORLD WAR II ROADSHOWWOSU will host a Columbus World War II Roadshow from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday (6/23) at WOSU@COSI, 333 W. Broad St. The event will coincide with Ken Burns’ “The War,” a seven-part, 14-hour television series that will air in September on WOSU TV. Veterans, family members, and anyone with a WWII interest are invited to bring World War II photos, letters, souvenirs, and mementos and share family stories. Items will be videotaped and posted to WOSU’s ohiowarstories.org (currently under development and set to launch in July), and some will be included in a local WOSU TV program airing in September. Do you know correct portion sizes? Ohio State Newark is offering “Portion Distortion” from 11 a.m.-noon Thursday (6/21) in 66 Hopewell Hall. The discussion will provide tips for preventing overeating and a different perspective on determining correct portions when eating out. Appointments are available in 20-minute intervals and can be made online (click on Assessing Your Health Risks). Sponsored by Your Plan for Health, the health screenings can be used to populate biometric values, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, weight and height, required in the Personal Health Assessment online questionnaire. CONFERENCE WILL HELP YOUNG ATHLETES PLAY BETTER, STAY HEALTHIERThe registration deadline is Saturday (6/30) for the first OSU All Sports Conference to help adults who work with athletes under 18 years old be better coaches, trainers or team managers. On Saturday (7/28) at Ohio State’s Columbus campus, leading experts will lead 15 sessions on physical and safety concerns, aspects of wellness, and the business side of youth sports.
