Ohio State will be a very busy place this weekend as the 2008 Ohio Special Olympics Summer Games take place at several campus locations. Approximately 7,000-10,000 visitors are expected to attend the annual games, which kick off at 6:30 p.m. Friday (6/27) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Visitors should prepare for traffic restrictions in the area since City of Columbus crews will be performing pavement repairs on state Route 315 between Ackerman Road and I-670. Repairs will take place from 8 p.m. Friday (6/27) through 5 a.m. Monday (6/30). Motorists should expect delays and consider alternate routes. Specific road restrictions are available online.

Over the past several months, a number of e-mails have been circulating from sources claiming to be from the Ohio State webmail team or admin managers. The e-mails ask people to submit their osu.edu e-mail account information and password, sometimes along with personal information like a birth date. These messages are not from OIT; they are phishing attempts. You should never reply to these e-mails and never give your password to anyone. Unsure about whether the e-mail is legitimate? The OSU Urban Arts Space, 50 W. Town St., will host a Gallery Talk about the Secret History of Columbus and Clean Water from 5:30-6:30 p.m. today (6/26). When the city of Columbus decided to provide clean water for the people, the world was watching. Join architect and historian Conrade Hinds as he describes the cutting-edge science and the people involved in securing water for the city's future. The talk is free and open to all. A first-ever conference in Ohio, “Create a Diversion,” will look at ways to compost America’s 26 million tons a year of food scraps, which together make up the third-biggest part of the U.S. waste stream. The conference will take place from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday (6/27) at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Conference Center, 4900 Sinclair Road. The Ohio Compost Association is sponsoring the conference in partnership with Ohio State’s Ohio Composting and Manure Management Program, the Ohio EPA and Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Stu Ludsin, OSU assistant professor of evolution, ecology, and organismal biology, is the next Stone Lab lecture series guest on Thursday (7/3). He will deliver “Hypoxia Alters Species Distributions and Interactions: Implications for Food Webs and Fisheries” from 7:45-9 p.m. The public is welcome and a Put-in-Bay Water Taxi is available from the Boardwalk Restaurant dock at 7:15 p.m. A short tour of Gibraltar Island will be provided. In an effort to ensure that faculty and staff have exclusive access to the offers promoted on Ohio State’s faculty/staff discounts Web page, it will now require visitors to sign in using their name.# and password. This enhancement will enable the addition of new offers that are limited to Ohio State employees and may require restricted access, as well as keep the site protected from unwanted solicitors. General universitywide offers will continue to be listed on the page, and communicated through human resource professionals and Resources, the Office of Human Resources’ quarterly newsletter. The University District Organization, with support from a Neighborhood Partnership Grant from the United Way of Central Ohio, is presenting a community forum at 7 p.m. Monday (6/30) at Indianola Presbyterian Church, 1970 Waldeck Ave. This is the first in a series of four community forums centered around the concept of creating a livable, urban community in the University District. Students and other research staff are encouraged to attend an information session to learn about the IRB approval and exemption process from 10-11 a.m. Friday (8/8) in 20 Page Hall. Training includes information about the types of studies that have these requirements, details about procedures and timelines for seeking approvals, and an opportunity to ask questions about specific projects. Windows XP Professional - Advanced: Includes information on setting up a home network, updating and securing your system, and more, and Web Design - Basic: Covers elements of good Web design and demonstrates how to create simple Web pages using a text editor. The American Language Program (English as a Second Language) is recruiting conversation partners for international students. Conversation partners offer students studying English the chance to converse in a relaxed and non-academic atmosphere with a native English speaker. Each conversation partner commits to spending at least one hour per week (for one quarter only) with his/her international partner. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to apply. The OSU Center for Family Research is hosting a Successful Students Strong Families Booster Session, Help from Home: Ways to Influence School Success, from 7-8 p.m. Friday (6/27) at the Central High Exploration Space at COSI.
