Ohio State’s expanding health sciences campus will monitor its “green” performance thanks to a unique partnership with the Center for Resilience in the College of Engineering and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The OSU Medical Center has made a commitment to incorporate sustainable technologies, including energy conservation, into a $1 billion master plan for campus expansion. The EPA’s National Risk Management Research Laboratory has provided funding to enable the medical center to track non-financial benefits such as greenhouse gas reduction, research productivity and community well being. Effective Tuesday (7/1), Ohio State’s Office of Student Affairs will become the Office of Student Life. The change aligns the office’s name with its primary goal of supporting and positively affecting the lives of students during their entire university experience. Student Life staff are in the process of changing the name on letterhead, Web sites and all other materials. Other areas of the university are requested to review their materials and change existing references to the office from Student Affairs to Student Life when possible and as new materials are designed. Three alumni of Ohio State were presented the Alumni in Government Distinguished Service Award on Monday (6/23) at OSU's Urban Arts Center. Honorees included: Jan Allen (’73), James Burley (’80), and Tom Walsh (’99). The awards were presented as a part of the OSUAA’s third annual Alumni in Government luncheon. The award recognizes individuals whose work as public employees has provided extraordinary benefit to Ohio citizens and whose service exemplifies Ohio State’s motto: Education for citizenship. The national champion Ohio State fencing team visited Washington, D.C. Tuesday (6/24) for the annual Day of Champions ceremony at the White House. The team toured the White House, participated in a photo and meet-and-greet with President George W. Bush, and attended a ceremony on the South Lawn. The Buckeyes presented the president with a framed picture of Ohio Stadium with the band spelling out “George W. Bush” in block letters on the field. The university's Recycled Paper Policy goes into effect Tuesday (7/1). The policy requires all copy paper used on campus to have at least 30 percent recycled content. It is estimated that the new initiative will save more than 8,000 trees and almost 3 million gallons of wastewater while diverting 382,000 pounds of solid waste from the landfill. Ohio State Newark and Central Ohio Technical College will host the annual community Independence Day Concert and Fireworks display on Thursday (7/3), featuring a performance by the Heisey Wind Ensemble at 8 p.m. Classic Brass will open the celebration with a concert at 6 p.m. A patriotic fireworks display will begin at dusk. The concert and fireworks are free and the public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnics and blankets for a fun-filled evening of music and entertainment. The OSU Alumni Association will team with Scarlet and Gray sponsors to host the Alumni Cup on Monday (9/8) at the Ohio State Scarlet Course. Registration starts at 9 a.m. Shotgun start is at 11:30 a.m. This year's celebrity guest is President E. Gordon Gee, who will be joined by event host Archie Griffin, president and CEO of the Alumni Association. The Alumni Cup costs $400 per person and there are corporate partnership deals available (call 688-8565). Net proceeds from the outing benefit the Alumni Association's Scholarship Endowment. Learn the art of relaxation through Qigong ("chee-gong") - a method of relaxation and stress management through gentle movement. Counseling and Consultation Services offers sessions every Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in the Library/Media Resource Suite, second floor, Younkin Success Center.
