Ohio State to receive $9 million in Third Frontier grants
Ohio State has earned $9 million in state funds to boost research and commercialization activities with leading Ohio industry partners. The grants represent more than a third of the $24 million in the latest round of funding recommended by the Ohio Third Frontier Commission. The awards, contingent upon State Controlling Board approval, will be given through the Commission’s Wright Projects Program, which aims to build strong research capabilities within Ohio’s colleges and universities in support of Ohio’s economy. Three separate Ohio State initiatives will receive $3 million grants each. The principal university investigator for each are: Giorgio Rizzoni, director of Ohio State’s Center for Automotive Research; Michael Knopp, director of the Wright Center of Innovation in Biomedical Imaging; and Stephen Myers, director of the Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center. Political Science recognized for excellence in Graduate Teaching Programs
Political Science has been awarded the University Departmental Award for Exemplary Graduate Teaching Associate Programs. The award, sponsored by Faculty & TA Development and Ohio State's Graduate School, recognizes a department's exemplary achievement in providing outstanding prior preparation and significant ongoing support to its Graduate Teaching Associates for their teaching roles. The selection committee commended the department for its effort in creating a culture that values teaching and learning and for its outstanding courses on teaching, workshop series, orientations, and resource libraries. Gee and Beatty to lead September Roads Scholars Tour
Faculty who are newly hired, newly tenured, or new in senior leadership positions are invited to join President Gee and Senior Vice President Joyce Beatty on the Roads Scholars Tour to northwestern Ohio Wednesday (9/9)-Thursday (9/10). The tour is a two-day professional development experience through which faculty can meet new colleagues, explore opportunities for partnerships, and see first hand how Ohio State is an engine for Ohio's future. There is no cost to participate; the tour is underwritten by the offices of the President, Outreach and Engagement, Continuing Education, and OSU Extension. Pharmacy professors to lead June 3 Science Cafe
The next Science Cafe will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (6/3) in the Gateway Movie Theater in the South Campus Gateway. Kenneth Hale, assistant dean and clinical associate professor, OSU College of Pharmacy and Lane Wallace, chair and professor, Division of Pharmacology, and a panel of pharmacy students will discuss "Prescription Stimulants as Cognitive Enhancers: Pharming to Get By or Welcomed New Method of Improving Brain Functioning?" June 3: ICS presents Chinese-kite making demo with visiting artist Jingfei Li
The Institute for Chinese Studies will present a Chinese-kite making demonstration at noon Wednesday (6/3) in the Hagerty Courtyard. Jingfei Li, a visiting artist at the City of Upper Arlington and one of a handful of Dian-style kite makers, will discuss the process of creating Chinese Dian-style kites. Chadwick Arboretum Rose Walk and Lecture June 4
The public is invited to the Chadwick Arboretum Rose Walk and Lecture at 6:30 p.m. Thursday (6/4) in the Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens. Meet in front of Howlett Hall and join nationally recognized rosarian and EarthKind promoter George Meiling for an in-garden lecture and rose walk. Also presenting are Susie Johnson, Columbus Parks and Recreation landscape designer, and Caye Aiello, Chadwick Arboretum volunteer and rosarian. A tour of the rose gardens will follow. June 5: Survival Analysis for Observational Studies
Xin He, OSU assistant professor, Division of Biostatistics, College of Public Health, will present “Survival Analysis for Observational Studies” from 2-3 p.m. Friday (6/5) in 1215 Ross Heart Hospital. The lecture will focus on some of the basic techniques for the analysis of time-to-event data. Alumni Association hosts Guys' Night Out with Columbus Clippers
The OSU Alumni Association and The Columbus Clippers invite you to Guys' Night Out with the Columbus Clippers at the new Huntington Park stadium, where the Clippers take on the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday (6/16). Alumni association member price is $30 per person; nonmember price is $35. Registration fee includes all-you-can-eat buffet and a ticket to the game. Space is limited. Veterinary College hosts puppy classes
The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine offers puppy socialization classes for puppies and their owners. Puppy Kindergarten serves to socialize new puppies so they may learn to handle stress and new situations well as an adult and provides owner education in all aspects of canine development and behavior problem prevention and resolution.
