GPS stations can detect clandestine nuclear tests

At the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization meeting this week, American researchers are unveiling a new tool for detecting illegal nuclear explosions: the Earth's global positioning system (GPS).

Even underground nuclear tests leave their mark on the part of the upper atmosphere known as the ionosphere, the researchers discovered, when they examined GPS data recorded the same day as a North Korean nuclear test in 2009, said Ralph von Frese, OSU professor of earth sciences and senior author on the study.

Check out the onCampus Conferences & Workshops Guide

Until very recently, someone planning an event on campus — from a wedding to an academic conference — often had to call each individual facility, which could obviously become tedious and time-consuming. But a new consortium comprising all event venues on campus is dedicated to changing the way event planning happens. Check out the 2011 onCampus Conferences & Workshops Guide for the story, as well as for listings of many of the venues available at Ohio State: http://oncampus.osu.edu/pdf/2011CWguide.pdf.

Pelotonia 2011

On the right path to safe riding

Central Ohio has lots of public bike paths — often referred to as multi-use paths — winding through scenic parks and woodlands. If you choose to train for Pelotonia 2011 by riding on the paths, please be aware of a few simple rules of the path to keep everyone safe and headed in the right direction, including: speed limit is 15 miles per hour; stay to the right, pass on the left; and give an audible signal when you pass someone.

The problem comes when people don't obey the rules – and the problems seem to come in two varieties: pedestrians and cyclists. To read more, see the June 7 entry on The Rider blog, written by Steve Wartenberg: "On The Right Path – To Safe Riding."
