Kinema Japan starts next week, taking viewers to Japan, with film selections that encompass the entire spectrum of Japanese filmmaking, from samurai classics to sci-fi stunners. Success uncorked for Ohio's wine industry: Double the wineries, 4K jobs, $580M economic impact

 Andy Troutman co-owns The Winery at Wolf Creek near Akron and is vintner and co-founder of Troutman Vineyards and Winery in Wooster, and as such is part of a significantly growing industry: the number of wineries in Ohio has nearly doubled since 1997.

And he says Ohio State — through its Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and through OSU Extension — has played a big role in the increase. Troutman's operations alone have added 26 part- and full-time jobs in the past 10 years, a tenfold jump from a humble start.

Labor & Delivery Study at the OSU Medical Center: An OSU-based research team is evaluating changes in inflammatory markers during labor. The study is open to first-time mothers-to-be with low-risk pregnancies. Participants will have blood sampled by a small needle at the time of labor admission and, again, at 2 hours and 4 hours after admission. Being in the study will not change the care received during labor. Participants receive up to $30 in Babies-R-Us gift cards.

Food Science and Technology College Bowl team wins national championship

The College Bowl competition, one of five competitions sponsored by the Institute of Food Technology Student Association, tests teams' knowledge in a variety of food science areas from food chemistry, microbiology, and engineering to food laws and regulations and general IFT trivia. Representing the Midwest division, Ohio State recently competed and won the national championship in New Orleans at the 2011 Annual Meeting.

Teachers named to summer bioenergy, bioproducts program

Fourteen Ohio educators have been chosen to participate in a multi-state project designed to bring the most current information on bioenergy and bioproducts into the classroom. Dennis Hall, co-program manager for the Ohio Bioproducts Innovation Center in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, recently announced the participants in the Northeast Bioenergy and Bioproducts professional development program. Hall is Ohio's representative on the five-year project, which is based at Cornell University.

Kirwan Institute call for commissioned papers; July 15 deadline

The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity has issued a call for commissioned papers in the democratic merit project, an initiative funded by Public Interest Project – Fulfilling the Dream Fund. Papers will illuminate issues related to the value of diversity in higher education, the democratic mission of colleges and universities, how traditional measures of merit in the college admissions process have influenced racial, ethnic and socio-economic diversity, and other relevant themes. Deadline for is Friday (7/15).

Independence Day holiday reminder; OSUToday schedule

The university will recognize the Independence Day holiday on Monday (7/4). There will be no classes and university offices will be closed. OSUToday will be published next week on Tuesday (7/5), Wednesday (7/6) and Thursday (7/7).

CABS Independence Day holiday service announced

In observance of the Independence Day holiday, there will be no CABS service on Monday (7/4). On Monday, WA, WB, WC, and CX permits are valid in C spaces on Central Campus. During summer quarter, there is no CABS service overnight, on weekends, or on university holidays.

South Dodd Hall parking lot closes for renovations July 5

The South Dodd Hall parking lot, on the southeast corner of Medical Center Drive and Cannon Drive, will close temporarily for renovations beginning Tuesday (7/5). Work is expected to be complete by the end of July. Parking permit holders may park in the Polo Lots off of Cannon Drive. In addition, customers may exchange their current permit for a CX parking permit and park in the Buckeye Lot off of Ackerman Road and Fred Taylor Drive. The Med Center Express CABS bus route runs weekdays, 5:30 a.m.-1 a.m.

Ackerman Complex east entrance drive lane improvements

Resurfacing of the drive lane at Ackerman Road and Fred Taylor Drive, which leads into the Ackerman Road Complex at 660 Ackerman, will begin on Tuesday (7/5). Thru traffic will be available during the majority of the road work, however some phases of the resurfacing work will require a full closure of the drive lane entrance. On the days when the east entrance is closed, the Medical Center shuttle will provide service every 20 minutes.

Support Pelotonia while viewing Red, White, and Boom

In celebration of the Independence Day Holiday, and to facilitate parking and fireworks viewing during Red, White, and Boom, Transportation & Parking Services is opening all campus garages at 5 p.m. Friday (7/1) to public parking, free of charge. Reps from Transportation & Parking Services will be on site in the Ninth Ave. West, Ninth Ave. East, and SAFEAUTO Hospitals Garages collecting donations in support of Pelotonia 2011. Normal garage operations will resume at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday (7/5).

Ethics for an Aging World Conference Oct. 8-9

Ohio State's Department of Anesthesiology and The Innovation Group for the Center for Ethics and Human Values are hosting a two-day Ethics for an Aging World conference Saturday (10/8)-Sunday (10/9) at the Ohio Union. Prominent national and international speakers will explore topics of moral and ethical aspects of health care for the aged. All faculty and staff are invited to attend; OSU medical residents and students receive free admission.

Digital Union hosts LectureTools workshop July 6

Join the OCIO's Digital Union and Perry Samson, University of Michigan professor and developer of LectureTools, for a hands-on demo of this web-based application that engages students by encouraging the use of laptops and phones during lecture. A light lunch and a guest account for LectureTools will be provided for all attendees at this session at noon Wednesday (7/6) in 260 Ramseyer.
