IBE students travel to CERN for hands-on experience Sponsor

Andrew Topinka and his teammates in the Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) honors program decided to tackle the issue of reducing food waste in developed countries by creating a sensor that notifies a person of a meat’s approaching spoilage. To build the prototype, the students traveled to the internationally renowned European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland as the first undergrads and U.S. citizens to work in the lab.

Dance professor creates film that's gone viral Sponsor

Mitchell Rose, associate professor of dance-filmmaking, recently created Exquisite Corps, a film that has already gone viral in the dance world. After just five days, the video had more than 20,000 views. In this literary form, a story passes from writer to writer, each picking up where the previous person left off. Rose was inspired by this idea and created a dance version of it. The 5:49-minute video took two years and the involvement of 42 well-known American contemporary choreographers to honor differences and eccentricities in the dance community.

CEMAS, FEI design electron microscopy digital theater

Earlier this month, the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) hosted an event to dedicate a new digital learning environment on West Campus and to thank FEI Company for providing support. In the Electron Miscroscopy Collaboratory, students and guests can experience live remote access of CEMAS instruments within a technologically advanced classroom.

Secondary analysis of data, specimen workshops
The Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) offers workshops on secondary analysis of data and specimens. They focus on regulatory requirements, IRB review considerations and scenarios involving secondary data and specimen analysis. The session Thursday (7/14) 4-5 p.m. in the Research Commons, Third Floor 18th Avenue Library, 175 W. 18th Ave., is tailored to social and behavioral sciences researchers. The session Friday (8/12) 8-9 a.m. in the Clinical Skills Education and Assessment Center, Room 620, Prior Health Sciences Library, 376 W. 10th Ave., is tailored to medical researchers. Anyone preparing IRB submissions may attend either session.

Stop the menopause madness

Register for the Center for Women’s Health monthly, six-session series that empowers women with information on what to expect during the change of life. We will explore treatment options for the many symptoms of menopause, from hot flashes to changes in sexual satisfaction, skin/hair quality and bladders that seem to have abandoned us. First class is Wednesday (7/13). All sessions are 6-7:30 p.m.
