Subramaniam to chair mechanical, aerospace engineering
Vish Subramaniam has been named chair of Ohio State’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. In addition to his role as a mechanical engineering professor and as director of the Applied Physics Laboratory, he is a decorated educator, researcher and inventor. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Ohio State before joining the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering as an assistant professor in 1988.

Expecting a baby? The OSU Health Plan and YP4H encourage expectant mothers with OSU Health Plan insurance to join the Buckeye Baby program. In addition to educational programs and lactation support, the program consists of four live webinar-based discussions that review pregnancy-related topics, offering support from early pregnancy through delivery and post-partum. Ask questions and share ideas with other pregnant moms. Individual telephonic sessions are also available as needed with a RN and Health Coach/Dietitian. Next series begins Monday (8/8).

Dancing with the community
From central Ohio schools to Salvador, Brazil, the Department of Dance partners with local and international communities to expand the public understanding of dance. Students from the department have engaged with the Franklin County Community Based Correctional Facility, Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center and many others in a conversation through words and movement.

STAR-OHIO's Straight A funds to improve student literacy
Sit Together and Read – Ohio (STAR–Ohio) has received a $754,000 Straight A grant from the Ohio Department of Education. The reading intervention program, led by Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy researchers, will be implemented online across Ohio in early childhood special education classrooms. The project will provide more than 70 teachers with a cost-effective and easy-to-implement intervention that will improve language and literacy development in 1,500 children.

CFAES graduate students at Borlaug Summer Institute on Global Food Security
Three graduate students in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences were among 40 students from U.S. universities invited to attend the Borlaug Summer Institute, an intensive, two-week program that explores the challenges and solutions surrounding global food security. Vivian Bernau (horticulture and crop science), Dustin Homan (agricultural communication, education and leadership) and Susan Ndiaye (entomology) were selected among a competitive pool of candidates to participate in the event, which took place June 5-18.

Kukielka-Blaser receives Fulbright to Germany
Joanna Kukielka-Blaser, program director for international relations in the Office of International Affairs, is the recipient of a prestigious Fulbright International Education Administrator (IEA) Seminar award to Germany. This award helps U.S. international education professionals create empowering connections with higher education systems in other countries. For two weeks in October, Kukielka-Blaser will participate in a seminar to learn about Germany’s higher education system, society and culture. She also is the Fulbright Scholar Program campus liaison at Ohio State and can be contacted by those interested in learning more about Fulbright opportunities.

Conference focuses on collegiate AOD prevention, recovery
Registration is now open for this year’s conference, to be held at the Blackwell Inn and Conference Center Tuesday (August 2) through Thursday (August 4). The conference will provide campus professionals the training and tools necessary to strengthen alcohol and drug prevention, intervention and recovery during the higher education experience and beyond.
