THOMPSON TO RECEIVE NATIONAL MEDAL OF SCIENCE FRIDAY

Ohio State researcher Lonnie Thompson will receive the President’s National Medal of Science in a White House ceremony at 1:50 p.m. Friday (7/27). The ceremony will be available as a live webcast at www.whitehouse.gov. Thompson, a distinguished university professor of earth sciences at Ohio State, is the first Ohio State researcher to win the award, and only the second from Ohio since the program began in 1959. The award, considered perhaps the highest honor the United States bestows on an American scientist, caps nearly three decades of research in some of the world’s most remote regions.

OSU MEDICAL CENTER CEO ACCEPTS NEW POSITION

Fred Sanfilippo, who during the past seven years guided the OSU Medical Center into the top tier of academic medical centers to include national recognition of its research, education and clinical programs, has accepted the leadership of health sciences at Emory University, starting Monday (10/1). As executive vice president for health affairs at Emory University, CEO of the Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center and chairman of the board for Emory Healthcare, Sanfilippo will have responsibility for more than 18,000 faculty and staff, and a budget that exceeds $2.1 billion. College of Medicine Dean Wiley “Chip” Souba Jr. will serve as interim senior vice president and executive dean for health sciences and CEO of the Medical Center and a search committee will be formed to help identify Sanfilippo’s permanent successor. PENDLETON-JULLIAN NAMED DIRECTOR OF KNOWLTON SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

Ann Pendleton-Jullian, a Boston architect and associate professor at MIT, will serve as the next director of the Knowlton School of Architecture. Pendleton-Julian, a native of Cleveland, has been involved in the design of buildings around the globe including the Asian University for Women in Bangladesh, the conversion of the North Truro Air Force Station in Cape Cod, and a home for the late astronomer Carl Sagan and his wife, author Ann Druyan. With architecture degrees from Cornell and Princeton universities, Pendleton-Jullian plans to continue teaching while serving as director. She will assume the duties of director Saturday (9/1). Join Wexner Center Director Sherri Geldin and Greater Columbus Arts Council President Bryan Knicely at 7 p.m. Monday (7/30) in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater as they discuss the role that the arts - and specifically public art - can play in revitalizing neighborhoods. The roundtable discussion, organized by the University District Organization as part of its Fifth Mondays lecture series, includes a Q&A with audience members. A reception will follow in the cafe. Don’t miss the double feature screening starting at 7 p.m. today (7/26) as part of the Wexner Center for the Arts Summer Abroad series. “Cleo from 5-7” depicts two hours in the life of a singer as she waits to learn if she has cancer. A classic of the French New Wave, the film was shot on the streets of Paris and features a score by Michel Legrand. The School of Teaching and Learning is hosting a seminar with legendary educator and scholar Dorothy Heathcote Monday (8/6)-Wednesday (8/8). All faculty planning to march in the academic processional at Summer Commencement on Sunday (8/26) in the Jerome Schottenstein Center should notify their college dean's office by Friday (8/17). Find out about tobacco cessation programs, which are either offered at no additional cost or are partially reimbursed, up to $60 per year upon completion to eligible employees. Also, check out CareAllies Tobacco Cessation lifestyle program to work with a health coach. The program is free to benefit-eligible faculty and staff who have completed the Personalized Health Assessment and have authorized its release to the health plan. Participation in tobacco cessation programs offered through CareAllies or sponsored by Ohio State is worth 25 points in the 2007 Faculty and Staff Incentive Program.

OSU’S GATEWAY GARDEN JUBILEE AUG. 4

Ohio State’s ninth annual Gateway Garden Jubilee, to be held at the Gateway Learning Gardens in Springfield Saturday (8/4), will feature garden tours, demonstrations, field trials of more than 200 annual varieties, an Ohio State Regional Turf Plot and the Early Ohio Settlers’ Garden. Sponsored by OSU Extension, the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, and the Master Gardeners of Clark County, the free public event runs from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Refreshments and entertainment, featuring the bluegrass band Loosely Strung, will be provided.
