OSU MEDICAL CENTER PROGRAMS NAMED AMONG NATION'S BEST

Eight medical specialties at Ohio State are named among the nation’s best in the latest survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report magazine, available at newsstands this week. This is the 16th consecutive year Ohio State has been named one of “America’s Best Hospitals” in the magazine. The oncology program at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute again ranked among the top 20 cancer programs in the country, and the respiratory disorders program at the OSU Medical Center jumped 14 places to reach 27. The magazine also recognizes OSU programs in ear, nose and throat, endocrinology, gynecology, kidney disease, orthopedics and rehabilitation. Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. GEE FAMILY INJURED IN PHILADELPHIA

President E. Gordon Gee is in Philadelphia attending to the needs of his daughter and son-in-law after they were injured in a serious motor vehicle accident there on Saturday. President Gee shared his thanks “for the many expressions of concern for Rebekah and Allan. I am grateful for the thoughtfulness, friendship and prayers of so many. They are receiving excellent medical care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. But more importantly, I believe in the healing power of family, friends, and love, which they have in abundance and will continue to need as they face the long road to recovery.”

DEPENDENT TUITION NO LONGER REQUIRES THREE-YEAR WAIT

Eligible dependents of some Ohio State employees no longer have to wait to take advantage of the university’s reduced tuition benefit. Staff and tenure-track faculty have had a three-year wait from their date of hire to become eligible for the dependent tuition benefit. But starting fall quarter 2008, sons, daughters, spouses and same-sex domestic partners of eligible OSU employees can take a 50 percent reduction based on in-state undergraduate general and instructional tuition rates - 75 percent if two parents or partners work at OSU. BIO-BASED COMPOSITE MATERIALS FOCUS OF JULY 23 FORUM

Join scientists and industry leaders on campus Wednesday (7/23) as they present new developments in the area of bio-based composite materials and engage in discussions that will guide the future development of these critical resources. Organized by Ohio State’s Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center and industry coalition PolymerOhio, the Bio-based Composite Materials Emerging Technology Forum will be held from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. OHIO SEA GRANT HOSTS STATE LEGISLATURE DAY JULY 18

Ohio Sea Grant will host its 17th State Legislature and Congressional Day Friday (7/18) on the shores of Lake Erie, giving state and local elected officials a chance to learn more about the issues facing the Great Lakes and what OSU has done over the years to solve those concerns. Afternoon activities to be held on Gibraltar Island, Ohio State's island campus in Put-in-Bay, include lure making, snake tracking, seining, and trawling. Speakers include Sam Speck, U.S. Commissioner of the International Joint Commission for the U.S. State Department, and Charles Herdendorf, director emeritus of Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab. Aspiration to Accomplishment: Celebrating 10 Years of Advancing Women Leaders in Ohio will take place Friday (11/7) at the University of Dayton. Keynote addresses will be delivered by: Madlyn Hanes, chancellor, Penn State University, Harrisburg; and Jacqueline King, assistant vice president, Center for Policy Analysis at ACE. The President’s Panel includes Barbara Snyder, Case Western Reserve University president and former Ohio State provost. The conference is presented by the Ohio Network, a state affiliate of the American Council on Education, Office of Women in Higher Education. More information will be available in the near future. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HOSTS THIRD ANNUAL ALUMNI CUP

The OSU Alumni Association will team with Scarlet and Gray sponsors to host the Alumni Cup on Monday (9/8) at the Ohio State Scarlet Course. Registration starts at 9 a.m.; shotgun start is at 11:30 a.m. Celebrity guest President E. Gordon Gee will be joined by event host Archie Griffin, president and CEO of the Alumni Association. AMERICAN IDOLS LIVE TOUR JULY 20

Tickets are still available for the American Idols Live tour at 7 p.m. Sunday (7/20) at Value City Arena. See the top 10 finalists from season seven perform the hits they sang on America Idol. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Fans attending the concert should use the Ackerman Road exit. VETERINARY COLLEGE HOSTS PUPPY CLASSES

The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine is offering puppy socialization classes for puppies age 8-16 weeks old and their owners. Puppies learn techniques to handle stress and new situations well as adults and owners learn about canine development and behavior problem prevention and resolution. Weekly classes meet at 6:30 p.m. for six weeks. OSU employees and students receive a $10 discount (regularly $100). Class size is limited, so register early. Registration forms and details are available online. Classes start on Thursday (7/31), Tuesday (8/5), Thursday (9/11) and Tuesday (9/30).
