OSU RESEARCHER TO DEVELOP GPS-LIKE SYSTEM FOR MOON
When NASA returns to the moon (target date is 2020) astronauts won't be able to use a global positioning system to find their way around, so NASA has awarded $1.2 million to OSU researcher Ron Li over the next three years to develop a navigation system. It will feel a lot like GPS to the astronauts that use it but will rely on signals from a set of sensors including lunar beacons, stereo cameras, and orbital imaging sensors. Li, the Lowber B. Strange Designated Professor of civil and environmental engineering and geodetic science, described the project in a poster session Monday (7/21) at the NLSI Lunar Science Conference at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT
The Office of Research is requesting nominations for the 2009 University Distinguished Scholar Award. Each year through the DSA program the university recognizes and honors six faculty whose scholarly activities, research or other creative works are at the forefront of their respective disciplines. Each award recipient will receive a research grant of $20,000 for the pursuit of further scholarly activity and a $3,000 honorarium. Nominations are due Monday (10/20). Application packets are available online.

PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY. Have you tried yoga through videos or classes? Do you consider yourself to be a “beginner” at yoga? Would you like to contribute to research on the health benefits of yoga? Healthy women ages 30-65 who are beginners at yoga can earn up to $325 for participating in research on the immune and hormonal effects of yoga. NATIONAL FORUM ON DISABILITY ISSUES JULY 26
Ohio State's ADA Coordinator L. Scott Lissner is participating in a National Forum on Disability Issues and encourages your participation online or in person. The event, featuring presidential candidate John McCain via satellite and Senator Tom Harkin representing presidential candidate Barak Obama, will be held from 12:30-4 p.m. Saturday (7/26) at the Conference and Technology Center in Columbus. Americans with disabilities and their friends and family (registration required) will attend the event and commemorate the 18th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The forum will feature time slots for the presidential candidates to individually present their visions for the future of disability policy in America followed by questions by Judy Woodruff, news anchor and journalist (The News Hour with Jim Lehrer). OHIO STATE TO HOST LIVESTRONG SUMMIT TODAY-JULY 27
The Lance Armstrong Foundation is collaborating with Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center to host the 2008 LIVESTRONG Summit to unite and empower people in the war on cancer. Champion cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong will be visiting Ohio State's campus as part of the summit that will be held today (7/24)-Sunday (7/27). OSU's Olentangy River Wetland Research Park, 352 W. Dodridge St. is celebrating its designation as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance with SWAMPFEST, set for 5-10 p.m. Thursday (9/25). Computer Science and Engineering is presenting the next Open Source Summer Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday (7/29) in 131 Hitchcock Hall. Damian Conway will discuss “Fun with Dead Languages.” Watch as Conway hacks code in five unrelated languages (none of them Perl). An honorary associate professor of information technology at Monash University, Australia, Conway runs an international IT training company, Thoughtstream. A book signing will follow the talk. OHIO STATE TO HOST PERSONALIZED HEALTH CARE CONFERENCE
Ohio State will host the Personalized Health Care National Conference Thursday (10/16)-Friday (10/17) at the OSU Medical Center. The discussions will focus on strategies and critical infrastructural developments needed to achieve success in translating scientific discoveries in personalized medicine to effective health care practices. The event will feature internationally renowned speakers in personalized medicine, including Jeffrey Trent, president of Translational Genetics and Edison T. POLL WORKERS NEEDED FOR NOVEMBER ELECTION
Franklin County needs 5,000 civic-minded individuals to work the polls for the Tuesday (11/4) general election and the John Glenn School of Public Affairs and the Ohio State community are invited to join them. Ohio law permits public employees to work the polls without using banked leave time when a supervisor approves. Poll workers earn a minimum of $123. You must be a U.S. citizen and registered to vote in Franklin County, attend a three-hour training course and have transportation to the polls. Work hours are 5:30 a.m.-8 p.m. on Election Day. Call the Franklin County Board of Elections at 462-5393 or register online.
VETERINARY COLLEGE HOSTS PUPPY CLASSES
The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine is offering puppy socialization classes for puppies age 8-16 weeks old and their owners. Puppies learn techniques to handle stress and new situations well as adults and owners learn about canine development and behavior problem prevention and resolution. Weekly classes meet at 6:30 p.m. for six weeks. OSU employees and students receive a $10 discount (regularly $100). Class size is limited, so register early. Registration forms and details are available online. Classes start on Thursday (7/31), Tuesday (8/19), Thursday (9/11) and Tuesday (9/30).
