OSU ENTOMOLOGIST IS SUMMER COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

David Denlinger, Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Entomology will address more than 1,900 graduating students during summer commencement, set for 1 p.m. Sunday (8/24) at the Jerome Schottenstein Center. Graduates and guests can find complete information on the ceremony at www.osu.edu/commence/. A member of Ohio State's faculty since 1976, Denlinger is regarded as one of the world's leading environmental insect physiologists. He has earned international recognition for his contributions to entomology and their application to agriculture, the environment and human health. Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. SERVICES SET FOR PRESIDENT GEE'S SON-IN-LAW

Due to an overwhelming number of inquiries, the president's office wishes to release information regarding services for President E. Gordon Gee's son-in-law, Allan Frederick Moore, who died Thursday (7/24) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on Saturday (7/12) in suburban Philadelphia. A family funeral for Moore will be held today (7/28) in Danville, Va. A memorial service will be held in Boston at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Dr. Allan F. Moore Memorial Fund c/o The Office of the President, The Ohio State University, 205 Bricker Hall, 190 N. FINGERHUT TO PRESENT JULY 31 STONE LAB LECTURE

Eric Fingerhut, chancellor, Ohio Board of Regents, will present the next Stone Lab lecture, “The University System of Ohio” from 7:45-9 p.m. Thursday (7/31). The public is welcome and a Put-in-Bay water taxi is available from the Boardwalk Restaurant dock at 7:15 p.m. A short tour of Gibraltar Island will be provided. CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON PROTECTING PUBLIC HEALTH

OSU Extension and the College of Veterinary Medicine are hosting “One Medicine Conference: Contemporary Issues in Public Health,” on Thursday (9/11) and Friday (9/12) at the OSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital Auditorium. Keynote speaker Lonnie King, senior veterinarian for the Centers for Disease Control, will be joined by members of the OSU Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges. NEW RESEARCH BILLING FORM REQUIRED AUG. 1

Beginning Friday (8/1), a Medicare Coverage Analysis Form will be required for all new clinical trials involving the OSU Health System and OSU Physicians Group services. The purpose of the Coverage Analysis Form is to ensure that costs for protocol required items and services are billed to the appropriate payer and in compliance with Medicare’s Clinical Research Policy National Coverage Decision. To obtain the Medicare Coverage Analysis form or to learn more about this process, contact the OSUMC Research Billing Office at 293-2103 or Research.Billing@osumc.edu.

WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT NOMINATIONS DUE AUG. 28

The deadline is Thursday (8/28) for 2009 nominations for the YWCA Columbus Women of Achievement award. To be considered as a Woman of Achievement, the nominee must demonstrate the following: the YWCA vision of the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women; giving back to the community through her time, talent and/or resources; helping women and girls achieve their goals; and leadership in her profession and/or community. A nomination form is available online.

TELECLASS ON WORKPLACE FLEXIBILITY AUG. 7

Human Resources is offering a teleclass for university staff on Thursday (8/7). Learn how workplace flexibility can work for you and your staff. The discussion is open specifically for managers who want to learn how to increase engagement and retention in their department, college or unit by implementing flexible work options for their staff. CONWAY TO DISCUSS FUN WITH DEAD LANGUAGES JULY 29

Computer Science and Engineering is presenting the next Open Source Summer Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Tuesday (7/29) in 131 Hitchcock Hall. Damian Conway will discuss “Fun with Dead Languages.” Watch as Conway hacks code in five unrelated languages (none of them Perl). An honorary associate professor of information technology at Monash University, Australia, Conway runs an international IT training company, Thoughtstream. A book signing will follow the talk.
