UNIVERSITY REGISTRAR MOVE DETAILS ANNOUNCED

Most of the offices of Student Financial Aid and the University Registrar (and all of Enrollment Management and Enrollment Services Administration) are moving to the Fawcett Center over the next couple of weeks. OUR and OEM will move Saturday (8/2)-Sunday (8/3), while SFA and ESA will move Saturday (8/9)-Sunday (8/10). However, the offices would like to emphasize the following points:

  • Public services for both SFA and OUR will remain in Lincoln Tower until they all move to the new Student Academic Services building in December 2009.
  • Mail can still be sent to Lincoln Tower. The mail services area will remain there and the addresses will not officially change until the move to the Student Academic Services building.
  • Phone numbers all remain the same - both for office groups and individuals.

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Must have access to Internet. A volunteer fee will be paid. If you are interested, please e-mail gcrc.research@osumc.edu.

COALITION TO CORRAL RECENT GRADUATES TO ADVISE KIDS ON HOW TO GO TO COLLEGE

The Ohio Community Service Council recently awarded a $50,000 grant to the Ohio College Access Network to plan a statewide partnership that will recruit and train recent college graduates to advise high school students on how to access education beyond high school. OCAN, along with the OSU Economic Access Initiative, Cleveland Scholarship Programs and Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, will lead an AmeriCorps project that will expand upon the work of high school guidance counselors and college access advisors serving Ohio's low-income and at-risk youth. Young adults recruited to participate will draw upon their recent college experiences to offer fresh insight into preparing for, funding, attending and graduating from postsecondary schools. PUBLIC HEALTH HELPS FUND INNOVATIVE, DOWNTOWN FARMERS MARKET

The Columbus Public Health Farmers Market kicks off its fourth season today (7/31) with more vendors than ever before. The market, funded in part by Ohio State's College of Public Health, provides nutritious food options to Columbus’ Downtown and East Side residents, areas known for having limited access to grocery stores. Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman will present opening remarks beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the front lawn of Columbus Public Health, 240 Parsons Ave. The market is funded in part by a $15,000 grant from Women and Philanthropy at The Ohio State University Foundation. JOB APPLICATIONS NO LONGER REQUIRE SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS

As part of Ohio State’s ongoing commitment to protect the personal, sensitive data of the university community, job applicants will no longer need to enter their Social Security numbers to set up an account at www.jobsatosu.com. This change complies with the university’s Policy on Institutional Data. The university’s online application system, People Admin, was upgraded on Friday (7/25) and Saturday (7/26) to accommodate this change.

CALL FOR PAPERS: AFRICA IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION SYMPOSIUM

The Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center invites the submission of abstracts and panel proposals for possible inclusion at its symposium on Africa in the Age of Globalization, set for Friday (10/17) at the African American and African Studies Community Extension Center, 905 Mount Vernon Ave. The symposium will examine the potential benefits and costs of globalization, particularly in Africa and the role it has played in Africa’s present state of affairs. IRB APPROVAL AND EXEMPTION PROCESS INFO SESSION AUG. 8

Students and other research staff are encouraged to attend an information session to learn about the IRB approval and exemption process from 10-11 a.m. Friday (8/8) in 20 Page Hall. Training includes information about the types of studies that have these requirements, details about procedures and timelines for seeking approvals, and an opportunity to ask questions about specific projects. The event is co-sponsored by the Graduate School and the Office of Responsible Research Practices. Register online

OARDC TO HOLD FIRST BUG BUDDY DAY CAMP AUG. 12

The Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster will hold its first-ever "Bug Buddy" day camp for children from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday (8/12). The program will focus on insects and a bug zoo, bug hunt, crafts and other activities are scheduled. Kids will get a free “bug in a cup” (a painted lady butterfly) to take home, raise, study and release. OSC HOSTS COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS WORKSHOP AUG. 6-7

The Ohio Supercomputer Center is hosting a new workshop, Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics, from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday (8/6) and Thursday (8/7) at OSC. The workshop will provide an introduction to the capabilities and characteristics of Computational Fluid Dynamics. Material will be presented through lecture, examples and hands on exercises.
