Spotlight on ... Family and Consumer Sciences Extension

Since 1909, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension programs have been a part of fulfilling OSU’s land-grant mission. While the formal name of the discipline and profession may have changed a few times over the past 100 years (Domestic Science, Home Economics, Family and Consumer Sciences), the track record shows that OSU Extension Family and Consumer Sciences has been, and continues to be a national leader in addressing critical needs of individuals and families to help them improve their lives and circumstances. As it moves into the next 100 years, FCS will continue to bring practical applications of research-based knowledge to meet the current and emerging needs of the clientele FCS serves. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Guggenheim scholar to lead Center for Urban and Regional Analysis

Daniel Sui has joined Ohio State’s Center for Urban and Regional Analysis as its director. He has also been named Distinguished Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the department of geography. A 2009 Guggenheim Foundation Fellow, Sui serves as the editor-in-chief for GeoJournal and a contributing editor of GeoWorld. The primary mission of CURA is to conduct research on issues/problems that apply to urban and metropolitan areas, rural areas, and broader regional issues. Study on a nutrition supplement for effects on blood sugar in men/women aged 35-70, mild to moderate diabetes, no other major health problems; must give two small blood samples, give two small urine samples, and take capsules for eight weeks. Today: IRB forms help session

Investigators, graduate students and research staff are encouraged to attend a help session on IRB applications from 3-4 p.m. today (7/15) in 113 Research Foundation. Office of Responsible Research Practices staff will provide an overview of the Initial Review of Human Subjects Research application and will also answer questions regarding other IRB forms (e.g., continuing review, amendment, event reporting). This particular session is targeted to researchers who submit materials to the Behavioral and Social Sciences IRBs, but is open to all human subjects researchers. Student Consolidated Services Center opens in Lincoln Tower

The new Student Consolidated Services Center, 320 Lincoln Tower, opened its doors to students on the first day of summer quarter to provide one-stop support and advice on behalf of the University Bursar, the University Registrar, Student Financial Aid, and referral to the Office of Minority Affairs. Chadwick Arboretum Open House July 19

The public is invited to the annual Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens Open House from 2-5 p.m. Sunday (7/19). The free event will showcase the arboretum's garden collection and provide a wide range of activities for adults and children.
