OSU team recognized by NASA for eco-friendly supersonic airliner concept

A team of OSU undergraduates was recognized in the 2009 NASA Fundamental Aeronautics University Competition for their eco-friendly supersonic airliner concept. The team of 22 juniors from aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering was awarded honorable mention in the undergraduate division; they were led by Kevin Disotell and advised by James Gregory, both of the Department of Aerospace Engineering. The award carries a cash prize and an invitation to present their design at the annual NASA Fundamental Aeronautics Meeting, scheduled for Tuesday (9/29)-Thursday (10/1) in Atlanta, Ga. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Creative Writing Program hosting Young Writers Workshop July 12-17

The Ohio State Creative Writing Program, in cooperation with Columbus City Schools, the College of Humanities and the Department of English, has invited 30 sophomores and juniors from the Columbus City Schools to attend a week-long residential summer workshop at Ohio State this week. The students are studying with faculty from Ohio State’s nationally recognized MFA in Creative Writing Program, and some of the more accomplished graduate students in the program. The program concludes with a Capstone Event on Friday (7/17) at the Fawcett Center; keynote speaker is Valerie Lee, chair of the Department of English from 2000-2009. Contact: Kelli Fickle, 292-2242

OSU Airport helps youth focus on aviation careers

Thirty-four African-American students visited the OSU Airport on Friday (7/10) as the youth completed a week-long camp introducing them to careers in aviation. Certified flight instructors from the university’s aviation department took the students on flights over central Ohio. The Aviation Career Education Academy, hosted by the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, provided the students with a trip to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, lunch with Tuskegee Airmen, and tours of several aviation facilities. Ohio State and Kroger offer food safety hotline

Thanks to a new partnership between the Kroger Co. and the Center for Innovative Food Technology, consumers can now contact OSU Extension's Food Safety Hotline at (800) 752-2751 (toll-free in Ohio), available weekdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The hotline has been operated since 1985 by Ohio State's Food Industries Center, however, a grant from CIFT, with support from Kroger, has allowed the university to hire a team of students to respond to consumer questions. The students are supported by personnel from the Food Industries Center and faculty experts from the Department of Food Science and Technology, Department of Human Nutrition, and OSU Extension. Rec Sports offers Pelotonia training

Ohio State Rec Sports is supporting Ohio State community members who have taken on the challenge to ride in Pelotonia — a grass roots bike tour in August to raise funds for cancer research at Ohio State. On-campus recreation facilities offer optimal cardio equipment, indoor stationary bikes, swimming, fitness classes, personal training sessions, and many other conditioning activities. Exploring Learning Technologies discussion July 17

On Friday (7/17), the Exploring Learning Technologies community will conduct an informal open discussion on keeping up with the info streams: Twitter, RSS, web sites, mailing lists, etc. How do you manage? What programs/tools do you use? What strategies do you use? Anyone with an interest in this subject is invited to participate. July 19: Free matinee cartoon at the Wexner Center

Bring family and friends for a free screening of the animated feature The Secret of NIMH at 1 p.m. Sunday (7/19). The story of a rodent mother trying to protect her family, finding help from a clumsy crow, a wise old owl, and some very magical rats is sure to be a big hit with families. Franklin County Master Gardeners host Public Field Day July 19

The Franklin County Master Gardener Vegetable Varieties Trial Garden will host a Field Day from noon-3 p.m. Sunday (7/19) at Waterman Farm — Ohio State's research farm and laboratory located at the corner of Lane Avenue and Kenny Road. The event is free and open to the public. Hands-on tours at noon and 1:30 p.m.; demonstrations and discussions of composting, raised beds, microirrigation, and intensive gardening/space saving gardening methods throughout the event. Chadwick Arboretum Open House July 19

The public is invited to the annual Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens Open House from 2-5 p.m. Sunday (7/19). The free event will showcase the arboretum's garden collection and provide a wide range of activities for adults and children. July 21: Workshops on interactive presentations using clickers

Register now to attend workshops about designing interactive presentations that provide real-time audience feedback. Turning Point Technologies will be on campus to showcase uses of classroom response systems ("clickers") on Tuesday (7/21) in 060 Science and Engineering Library. A session for new users will be held from 1-2:20 p.m.; experienced users session is 2:45-4 p.m. Both sessions will take place on Windows computers.
