Ohio State pioneers single-incision robotic kidney surgery
With just a single two-inch incision in the patient’s abdomen, urologic surgeon Ronney Abaza is able to perform a robotic-assisted surgery to remove a cancerous kidney. Only a handful of medical centers nationwide perform such minimally invasive single-port robotic-assisted surgeries, and Abaza, who treats patients at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, is the first in central Ohio to perform the procedures. Patients experience less blood loss, less pain, and shorter hospital stays and recovery times, according to Abaza, director of Robotic Urologic Surgery at the Medical Center. Read more >

Office of Research hosts info sessions on Third Frontier funding opportunities
The Ohio Third Frontier Program has made a number of changes to its programs and funding mechanisms for FY 2010. The Office of Research will host two information sessions to highlight these changes: from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday (7/29) in 1213 Ross Hospital Auditorium and 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday (8/4) in 1080 Physics Research Building. EHS Chemical Redistribution Program available to faculty, staff
Environmental Health and Safety’s Chemical Redistribution Program provides usable chemicals to faculty and staff to be used on campus for university related purposes at no cost. Interested persons must register on the Environmental Affairs portion of the EHS web site (http://www.ehs.ohio-state.edu) to view the available chemicals. First Metro High School Farmer's Market set for July 25
Students from Metro High School and OSU are hosting a farmers market, in collaboration with Ohio State, Growing America, and other local partners, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday (7/25) in the Metro High School parking lot, 1929 Kenny Rd. New iMix episode includes It's Abuse campaign, smart surveillance
A new episode of iMix will air on the Big Ten Network at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (7/28), 5 p.m. Thursday (7/30) and 8:30 a.m. Friday (7/31). The show features a segment on It's Abuse, a peer-to-peer, grassroots awareness effort to address the issue of relationship abuse on college campuses. This episode also explores the world of "smart" surveillance systems, efforts to train the "nintendo" generation of doctors using virtual surgery, and the John Glenn School of Public Affairs Kiplinger Fellowship. Stone Lab summer guest lecture series continues July 30
The Stone Laboratory Guest Lecture Series continues on Thursday (7/30) as Chris Korleski, director, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, presents "Big Issues/Little Money: Managing Environmental Issues on a Tight Budget." Each Thursday evening lecture will begin at 7:45 p.m. Guests are invited to take a Lake Erie Water Taxi, at their own expense, at 7:15 p.m. from the Boardwalk Restaurant dock to Gibraltar Island. July 30: Workshop on using web mashups to combine data sets
Interested in visual representations of data? Sign up for an introductory workshop on mashups for a step-by-step demonstration of combining data sets into a single view on the web. IRB process information session Aug. 7
Students and other research staff are encouraged to attend an information session on the IRB approval and exemption processes from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Friday (8/7) in 020 Page Hall. The session will include information about the types of studies that require IRB approval or can qualify for exemption, details about procedures and timelines for seeking approvals, and an opportunity to ask questions about specific projects.
