Stimulus supports student, teacher research experiences at Ohio State
Federal stimulus dollars are fueling 15 research projects at Ohio State this summer, funding the employment of local students and teachers in biomedical labs on campus. Under a program designed to provide jobs and expose students to health-sciences research career options, funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is supporting the laboratory work of five central Ohio science teachers and 49 students — 23 in high school and 26 in college. They are joining forces with Ohio State health sciences researchers to pursue discoveries intended to help clinicians prevent, diagnose and treat such conditions as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. RESEARCH STUDY. The OSU Division of Periodontology is conducting a study on wound healing of the gums (gingiva) of smokers. To be accepted as a volunteer participant you must: be a smoker for five or more years, 18-50 years old, in good health, have your upper (maxillary) teeth, and be available for one screening and four study visits. CIO office moving to Thompson Library July 28
The administrative offices of the Chief Information Officer will move out of its current location at 320 Baker Systems Engineering on Tuesday (7/28), and relocate at the newly renovated Thompson Memorial Library. The move includes the CIO, senior leadership team and office associates. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. WOSU Public Media to air debate on Columbus income tax increase
On Tuesday (8/4), voters will decide whether to permanently increase the city's income tax by 25 percent. WOSU’s Mike Thompson will moderate a debate on the proposed tax increase at 6 p.m. Thursday (7/30) at WOSU@COSI. Columbus City Council member Andrew Ginther will represent supporters of the income tax increase and Columbus attorney Bill Todd will argue against it.

July 30: ASL Program hosts 'Deaf in a Mainstreamed School'
Columbus native Jim Crane will present “Deaf in a Mainstreamed School: My Experiences” on Thursday (7/30) in 180 Hagerty Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Jim is a graduate of Bexley High School and Gallaudet University, the world‘s leading institute of liberal education and career development for deaf and hard-of-hearing undergraduate students. The lecture will be presented in ASL; interpreting services provided for the lecture and the Q&A session. Parking is available across the street in the Ohio Union South Garage. New iMix episode includes It's Abuse campaign, smart surveillance
A new episode of iMix will air on the Big Ten Network at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (7/28), 5 p.m. Thursday (7/30) and 8:30 a.m. Friday (7/31). The show features a segment on It's Abuse, a peer-to-peer, grassroots awareness effort to address the issue of relationship abuse on college campuses. This episode also explores the world of "smart" surveillance systems, efforts to train the "nintendo" generation of doctors using virtual surgery, and the John Glenn School of Public Affairs Kiplinger Fellowship. Human subjects online training course unavailable first week in August
On Monday (8/3), the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Program web site will be taken offline by its host for approximately five days for a system upgrade. Please complete your coursework, including the Basic Human Research (new users), Refresher (returning users), or optional training courses (e.g., RCR, GCP), prior to this time. Aug. 3: Pelotonia Injury Prevention and Training Seminar
OSU Sports Medicine will present a Pelotonia Injury Prevention and Training Seminar from 6-8 p.m. Monday (8/3) in the Pavilion Auditorium, Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza, 2050 Kenny Road. This series will focus on injury prevention, including bike fitting, sports nutrition, cycling training tactics as well as basic bike mechanics and maintenance. James Cancer Hospital seeking volunteer musicians
Musically talented volunteers are needed for the MusicCare program, which provides a relaxing and creative integration of live music for patients at The James Cancer Hospital. Selection criteria include but are not limited to: Previous experience performing in a hospital or nursing home setting; 18 years or older with strong interpersonal skills; and ability to determine appropriate type of music for current circumstances. More than 30,000 copies of the popular 60-page publication are distributed through campus mail, at 36 building sites and throughout the year at new employee orientation sessions.
