Spotlight on ... OSU Area Health Education Center
The Area Health Education Center (OSU AHEC) in the College of Medicine aims to extend into the community medical education, health care professional development, and health promotion and disease prevention. The signature Clear Health Communication Program offers health care professionals throughout Ohio and the Midwest in-depth instruction in the growing field of health literacy. Medical student education is enriched by clinical rotations in private practice sites in underserved areas of the state. The center helps prepare new practices for teaching and rewards in a variety of ways existing involving community “preceptors” who volunteer to teach. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. OSU to help state become "Silicon Valley for vehicle electrification"
Ohio State's Center for Automotive Research (CAR) is working with industry partners to accelerate the electric vehicle industry in Ohio. CAR has secured state approval for the first $500,000 of a $3 million Ohio Third Frontier Grant designed to help develop market-viable commercial electric vehicles, including buses and trucks -- a sector with a potential growth rate of 17.1 percent annually. Ohio companies Vanner Inc. and American Electric Power, along with STMicroelectronics of Michigan and Fil-Mor Express of Minnesota, are collaborating with CAR on the initiative, which is projected to create more than 900 new clean-energy jobs over the next five years. Carlson to become vice provost for undergraduate studies, dean for undergraduate education
Provost Joseph Alutto has recommended the appointment of Wayne E. Carlson, currently professor and chair of the Department of Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design, as vice provost for undergraduate studies and dean for undergraduate education. Subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, his appointment will be effective September 1. In this new role, Carlson will guide the development of programming to provide appropriately challenging academic experiences for undergraduate students. He joined Ohio State's faculty in 1988 as an assistant professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science. From 1991-2000, he served as the director of the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) and has served as chair of Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design since 2001.
Dispatch's Fisher named to host talk show on WOSU 820 AM
WOSU Public Media has named the successor to retired host Fred Andrle, announcing Ann Fisher as talk show host to debut in September on WOSU 820 AM. Fisher, who has more than 20 years of journalism experience, will build upon the foundation laid by Andrle while bringing WOSU listeners a different perspective and a different style. She is already known to WOSU listeners and viewers through her regular appearances on Open Line and WOSU TV's Columbus on the Record. Fisher has reported on the Central Ohio community since 1989, gaining extensive knowledge of the area, its people and its issues. She comes to WOSU from the Columbus Dispatch, where she has served as state desk reporter, editorial writer, state editor and metro columnist. OSU South Centers creates Growing! Ohio farmers' markets
Farmers' markets continue to sprout up across the country to help fill the demand created by consumers looking for local foods, and the OSU South Centers has developed the Growing! Ohio Farmers' Markets program to help market managers, vendors and producers. The program provides resources, education, training and technical assistance to help farmers succeed in capturing a greater share of the growing consumer demand. Office hours for help with IRB submissions
The Office of Responsible Research Practices holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. These sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies, and review procedures. The next session for biomedical/cancer researchers will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday (8/5) in 635 Fry Hall. Faculty and staff are invited to join the OSU Urban Arts Space on Thursday (7/30) from 6-7 p.m. to engage in a community game of Apples to Apples, while enjoying complimentary apples. Holding the honorary title of "Party Game of the Year" in 1999, this word game allows players to create interesting noun/adjective combinations, and share laughs and discussion with fellow community members. Thursday (7/30): Seminar on agritourism in Israel
The role tourism-related activities play in Israel's agricultural economy will be the focus of a free seminar from 1-2 p.m. Thursday (7/30) at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, Room 100. "Agritourism in Israel," is presented by Ohio State University Extension and the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Direct Marketing Program in partnership with the Ohio-Israel Agricultural Initiative of the Negev Foundation. It will be led by Yoav Gal, assistant professor in the Department of Economics and Management, Tel-Hai Academic College in Israel, and Bracha Gal, who has run his own agritourism operation since 2004.
