Swire appointed to serve Obama White House
Peter Swire, the C. William O'Neill Professor in Law and Judicial Administration at Ohio State's Moritz College of Law, has been appointed special assistant for economic policy to President Barack Obama, and will take a leave from his position at Ohio State to serve in the White House. This position is in the National Economic Council (NEC), led by Lawrence Summers. Among other matters, Swire will work on housing and housing finance issues. Swire has taught a range of business law courses at Ohio State, including Banking Regulation, Business Associations and Antitrust Law, along with his work on privacy and Internet-related issues. It will be Swire's second White House position; from 1999 until early 2001, he was on leave to serve as the Clinton administration's chief counselor for privacy in the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. Thompson Library to open Monday; Sullivant Library closes
The William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library will open at 7:30 a.m. Monday (8/3) after a three-year renovation. For the remainder of the summer quarter, the library's hours will be Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-midnight; Friday, 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m.-midnight.
The Sullivant Library at Sullivant Hall will close at the end of business on Sunday (8/2). Staff and materials currently at the Sullivant Library will be moved to the Thompson Library. The Music and Dance Library, also located at Sullivant Hall, will continue operations from that location. Read more: http://library.osu.edu/
Faculty among first class of American Chemical Society Fellows
Four Ohio State chemists have been selected to be part of the inaugural class of 162 American Chemical Society (ACS) Fellows, and will be honored when the society meets in August in Washington, D.C. The four Ohio State fellows - Malcolm H. Chisolm, James A. Cowan, Anne B. McCoy, and Susan V. Olesik - were chosen for their accomplishments as well as their distinctive service to ACS. Whitacre to present Aug. 6 Stone Lab summer guest lecture
The Stone Laboratory 2009 Guest Lecture Series continues on at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday (8/6) as Caroline Whitacre, OSU Vice President for Research, presents "Exciting New Research Developments at Ohio State." Guests are invited to take a Lake Erie Water Taxi, at their own expense, at 7:15 p.m. from the Boardwalk Restaurant dock to Gibraltar Island. Volunteers needed for Convocation
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience is seeking faculty, staff and students to fill a number of volunteer roles, from cheerers in Ohio Stadium to greeters and program distributors at St. John Arena, during the President's Convocation Monday (9/21). Volunteers are needed for two shifts: 9-11 a.m. at St. John Arena and 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Ohio Stadium. BuckeyeBar relocating to Thompson Library
The BuckeyeBar, currently located in 025 Central Classroom Building, will relocate to the 60A Thompson Memorial Library on Monday (8/3). The BuckeyeBar offers one-on-one technology consultation and problem solving. Faculty, students and staff can stop by the BuckeyeBar to meet with staff who can help connect to Ohio State's wireless network, diagnose a sluggish computer, address virus problems or answer questions about IT. Advertising deadlines approaching for onCampus resource Guide
Advertising deadlines are approaching for the 13th annual onCampus resource Guide, to be published Thursday (9/17). More than 30,000 copies of the popular 60-page publication are distributed through campus mail, at 36 building sites and throughout the year at new employee orientation sessions. Off Campus Student Services director honored
Willie Young, Ohio State's director of Off Campus Student Services, has been presented with the 2009 Parthenon Award by the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International. Young, who received the award in June at the association's 2009 annual conference and exposition in Baltimore, Md., earned the award based on his continued contributions to the collegiate housing profession. The Parthenon Award is the ACUHO-I Foundation's most prestigious award, recognizing supreme achievement in the profession, outstanding service, leadership and contributions to the field of student housing. Ohio State athletes earn scholar honors
Seventy-three Buckeye student-athletes have earned the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Big Ten Conference, the largest group of recipients from any school. The newly-established award is given to student-athletes who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 for the previous academic year (excluding summer school). Ohio State to host personalized health care national conference
Registration is now open for the second annual personalized health care national conference, which will be Saturday (10/1) in the Biomedical Research Tower. It is designed to advance a new approach to medicine in which disease prevention and treatment will be based on each individual's unique biology, behavior and environment. Leroy Hood, Ralph Snyderman, and other academic leaders, industry experts, government policy makers and healthcare providers from Ohio State and around the nation will participate. They will discuss innovations in personalized medicine research and the role of academic medical centers in adapting clinical and translational science into a value-based, patient-centric healthcare system.
