President Gee, Ohio State delegation enhance global outreach strategy with visit to China

President E. Gordon Gee and a group of Ohio State officials visited Shanghai, Qingdao, Beijing and Nanjing, China from Friday (6/25)-Wednesday (7/7) as part of Ohio State’s global outreach strategy. In addition to meeting with alumni, students and university officials, Gee presented a speech, “Universities as Drivers of 21st Century Innovation for Business,” at the Shanghai Expo 2010 as part of the AmCham Shanghai Distinguished Speaker Series. The group also formalized several agreements while in China that support collaborative research and solidify study abroad programs.

The OSU Department of Psychiatry is currently enrolling for i-SPOT-D: International Study to Predict Optimized Treatment in Depression. The goal of this research study is to identify genetic, biological and psychological markers that may predict response to antidepressants and help individualize treatments. Participants must be 18-65, currently depressed and willing to take one of three FDA-approved antidepressants. Participation involves two clinic visits and eight follow-up web-based questionnaires over 12 months. Participants get free study-related evaluation and compensation for their time. Ohio State one of three finalists for national endowment and foundation award

Ohio State has been named by Foundation & Endowment Money Management as one of the three finalists for “Best Large Non-Profit of the Year,” an award that encompasses all endowments and foundations in excess of $1 billion. Nominees and winners for these awards are selected by the editors of Foundation & Endowment Money Management newsletter — a leading publication covering the business of U.S. nonprofit investing — with input from subscribers and industry professionals. Study shows how dietary supplement may block cancer cells

Researchers at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James) have discovered how a substance that is produced when eating broccoli and Brussels sprouts can block the proliferation of cancer cells. Compelling evidence indicates that the substance, indole-3-carbinol (I3C), may have anticancer effects and other health benefits, the researchers say. These findings show how I3C affects cancer cells and normal cells. Read more >

Latest On Research blog looks at disconnect between science and the public

A recent series of workshops for scientists hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences focused on the intersection of science and public policy, leading some communication scholars to argue that scientists are, to some degree, at fault for the public's lack of understanding of science. Their argument: Scientists just don't listen to the public. Construction alert

Cannon Drive closure continues

Cannon Drive will continue to be closed during the week of Monday (7/5). Access to Drake Union and the mid-tower parking lot will be from the north. Drake Union bridge repair work will begin the week of Monday (7/12), affecting the bike path and entrance into the Drake Union. The Tower District site renovation project includes the removal and replacement of bridges and walks linking Drake, Lincoln, and Morrill Towers, in addition to new landscaping. Improvements will provide safer walking surfaces and better ADA accessibility. The project is expected to continue to December 2010. Contact: Facilities Operations and Development, 292-5725

Chine-collé at the OSU Urban Arts Space; reception July 8

 Check out the City Center’s launching exhibition Chine-collé from Friday (7/9)-Saturday (8/7) at the OSU Urban Arts Space. In this exhibition, the Columbus-based Chine-collé artist collective explores and reacts to Columbus' culture and the former City Center mall through sound and sculptural installations, abstract paintings, and a live performance. Office hours for help with IRB submissions

The Office of Responsible Research Practices holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. Sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies and review procedures. The next session for biomedical/cancer researchers will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday (7/7) in 652 Fry Hall. Paper and Bytes: Managing OSU Records July 8
