PACT receives Federal Choice Neighborhoods Initiative Grant

On Monday (6/30), the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded a $30 million grant to Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority and Partners Achieving Community Transformation to help improve and revitalize the Near East Side neighborhood around University Hospital East. PACT is a partnership between Ohio State, the City of Columbus and the CMHA. The federal Choice Neighborhoods Initiative Grant will allow PACT to redevelop and improve housing, empower people with workforce training and wellness programs, and grow this community by attracting new businesses.

Ohio State spinout receives investments to commercialize biosensor technology

 ProteoSense LLC, a Columbus-based spinout of Ohio State, is the most recent recipient of an investment from the $1 million Technology Concept Fund LLC and a $100,000 Ohio Third Frontier Technology Validation and Start-up Fund grant. Managed by TechColumbus, the Technology Concept Fund includes capital committed by Ohio State and Ohio Third Frontier.

ProteoSense is developing a unique sensor technology invented by College of Engineering and College of Medicine researchers to detect proteins that are fundamental markers of pathogens. The firm is focusing initially on detecting serious threats to food safety in fresh produce, such as salmonella, E. coli and listeria. Shown here is ProteoSense President and CEO Mark Byrne.

Making service to the university a simple affair

 Every day faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the university lend their skills to improving lives and communities. Now those folks will have an easier time giving back with the Tuesday (7/1) launch of Ohio State’s new Office of Volunteer Relations. The office, located in the Longaberger Alumni House and online at volunteer.osu.edu, is a clearinghouse for non-student Ohio State volunteer opportunities and a central hub for people who volunteer for or in the name of the university.

Independence Day holiday CABS service

In observance of the Independence Day holiday, there will be no CABS service on Friday (7/4). As a reminder, during the summer, there is no weekend service. Regular CABS summer service will resume on Monday (7/7). For more information, please visit the Transportation & Traffic Management website at ttm.osu.edu.

Parking information

In observance of the Independence Day holiday, the CampusParc Customer Service Center will be closed on Friday (7/4). During university-observed holidays, any valid CampusParc parking permit may park in any unreserved A, B, or C surface lot space. Pelotonia 2014

Registration fee increases July 9

 Register for Pelotonia at pelotonia.org. Registration for riders is $100 through Tuesday (7/8); on Wednesday (7/9) the registration fee goes up to $150 and the commitment to fundraising (based on the ride selected) cannot be retracted. You can increase the fundraising commitment and distance selected but you cannot withdraw from the fundraising commitment. Once you register for Pelotonia, make sure you connect yourself and your peloton to Team Buckeye.

Upcoming events

Ohio State, Royal Shakespeare Company: The Tempest

 Kelly Hunter adapts and directs “The Tempest” using a series of drama-based games developed to help combat the challenges of autism. The show, a co-production between Ohio State and the Royal Shakespeare Company, comes to Columbus Wednesday (7/16)-Sunday (7/20), with performances at the Wexner Center for the Arts and WOSU@COSI. It is aimed toward 8-16 year olds.

Aging Well: Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology

The OSU Retirees Association, in partnership with the Wexner Medical Center’s Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology, is hosting a free program on ongoing initiatives in aging in the OGG and share some tips you’ll be able to use in your own life to achieve your goal of aging well. Faculty and staff are welcome to attend on Saturday (7/12) from 9-11 a.m. in the Martha Morehouse Auditorium - Pavilion Building.
