Ohio State, Sinclair Community College team up

The College of Engineering and Sinclair Community College have announced a strategic partnership focused on unmanned aerial systems and data analytics. Ohio State and Sinclair will develop pathways from existing Sinclair UAS certificate and future UAS associate degree programs to data analytics and geospatial precision agriculture programs. Additionally, Ohio State students will have the opportunity to take general education courses through Ohio State and, after completing UAS technical courses at Sinclair, earn a UAS certificate or degree through Sinclair.

Workplace causes of asthma and chronic lung disease

The College of Public Heath recently released a study that found an increased risk for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease related to working in very cold or hot temperatures, performing physically demanding activities, working outdoors and working with exposure to contaminants. The study used a new way to look at the relationship between job exposures and the long-term risk of contracting asthma and/or COPD.

ESS service unavailable today (7/9)

Upgrades to PeopleSoft, the software engine behind Employee Self Service and the online student center, will cause Employee Self Service to be unavailable today (7/9) in order to complete the final cutover in preparation for launching the new system on Thursday (7/10). You will have full access at that time and will notice a different look and some new tools. Visit HR’s ESS Training page to see updated documentation on using the system.

The Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory, Department of Psychology is conducting an intervention examining the effects of exercise on mobility and cognition in MS individuals ages 30-59. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus for 12 weeks. Pre/post intervention testing includes MRI scanning, balance, cognitive assessment and questionnaires. Participants will perform aerobic exercise on-site for 45 minutes 3 times/week for 8 weeks. Participants are compensated and provided parking.

Alumni Association, CFAES team up overseas

 Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has worked closely with Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania since 2011. In its latest outreach effort, CFAES and the Alumni Association teamed up to help the university further develop its alumni relations efforts.

Rodis receives grant to enhance chronic disease outcomes

 The Ohio Department of Health has awarded Jennifer Rodis, associate professor of clinical pharmacy a $46,200 grant to increase medication therapy management services provided by pharmacists to improve the health and wellness of underserved Ohio citizens living with chronic diseases. The project expands MTM services to patients cared for in Ohio’s Federally-Qualified Health Centers.

Changes to IRB continuing review requirements

Investigators are no longer required to resubmit data collection forms, questionnaires, and screening instruments for continuing IRB review, unless these documents are new or are being revised. The Continuing Review of Human Subjects Research application and HRPP policy IRB Submission and Pre-Review have been updated to reflect this change.

Webinar on harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie

Ohio Sea Grant’s Stone Laboratory is hosting a public webinar to explain NOAA’s 2014 Seasonal Forecast of Harmful Algal Blooms for Lake Erie on Thursday (7/10) from 2-4 p.m. The event will feature expert commentary, a discussion of the history of this issue on Lake Erie, Ohio’s response to the problem, and strategies to solve the problem.

Core Fulbright U.S. Scholars Program competition open

The core Fulbright U.S. Scholars Program is now open for 2015-2016, and the deadline for the competition is Friday (8/1). The core program provides 800 U.S. faculty and professionals with opportunities to lecture and conduct research abroad each year. Interested Ohio State faculty and professional staff may contact the Office of International Affairs.

Pilot grants and research awards announced

OSU’s Center for Integrative Health and Wellness will award three pilot grants and two research awards in Fall 2014. OSU faculty and students at all levels of training are welcome to apply. Project topics must be focused on improving the evidence base regarding integrative health and wellness. Applications are available from Jennifer Long and are due by Sunday (8/31).
