Faculty inspired by fulbright awards

Ohio State, a top producer of Fulbright Scholars, is welcoming home a record number of faculty members who conducted research and shared meaningful exchanges with peers around the world during the last academic year. Fourteen faculty members received Fulbright grants in 2013-14 to study everything from atomic physics to Zulu beadwork to parasitic diseases in Central and South America. Some returned just this month.

International anti-corruption leader connects with students

A respected leader in anti-corruption efforts recently shared with Fisher College of Business students his insights into the struggle to reduce corruption and the benefits and consequences of doing so — all without leaving his home in Europe. Appearing via video conference from Slovenia, Drago Kos, chair of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Working Group on Bribery, engaged with students in a course on International Corporate Compliance and Ethics Governance taught by David Freel, senior lecturer in the Department of Management of Human Resources.

Research in View profile data-entry assistance

Data-entry assistance is available for faculty to have their CV information entered into their Research in View profile. Any faculty member with a new/blank Research in View profile is eligible. Priority for entry of faculty information is first-come, first-served, no exceptions. This service will not provide updates, fixes, edits, etc. to Research in View profiles after initial data input. All data will transfer to any new/revised system that the university uses in the future. If interested in data-entry assistance, send an e-mail to riv@osu.edu. Type “Data Entry Assistance” in the subject line and attach a Word or PDF version of your CV.

Pelotonia funds help purchase sophisticated technology

 Progress in cancer research – the process of moving from an observation made in the laboratory or clinic to discoveries that help patients – requires expensive technology and priceless biological samples such as tumor tissue and blood from patients. These samples must be stored under stringent conditions to preserve the fragile molecules their cells contain.

USAC to host Staff Pep Rally Wednesday (8/6)

The University Staff Advisory Committee (USAC) is hosting its annual Staff Pep Rally from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday (8/6) at the Ohio Union West Plaza. There will be games and food and a special guest appearance from Brutus Buckeye. All staff members are invited. The Pep Rally celebrates the beginning of the new academic year and is an opportunity to gather with fellow employees and learn about USAC’s commitment to advocating on behalf of staff.

Dr. E's PHD to Ph.D.: How Education Saved My Life

Based on excerpts from her memoir PHD to Ph.D, using storytelling, monologues, music and images, Dr. E performs her story of sexual exploitation, abuse, and addiction to promote healing, on Saturday (8/9) at 6:30 p.m. at the Hale Cultural Center, MLK Lounge. ‘Basic Communication Needs of the Deaf Patient’

Interpreter Services is offering a workshop, “Basic Communication Needs of the Deaf Patient” on Friday (8/8) from 9-11 a.m. at the Wallace Auditorium at OSU East Hospital. Attendees will examine materials written by deaf persons and the structure of American Sign Language, and will be instructed in how to use different communication techniques and the services of an interpreter in a clinical setting. Safe Zone Training offered through Multicultural Center

A free Safe Zone training will be held in the Rosa Ailabouni Room of the Ohio Union at 1 pm on August 5. This two hour interactive workshop will guide participants through discussions and activities designed to increase understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. The project is designed to raise awareness and discuss ways to make the spaces we live, and work in, more welcoming and inclusive of LGBTQ people. All are welcome to attend, and no RSVP is necessary.

Journey, one of the most popular American rock bands of all time, with some of the best-known songs in modern music, will appear Sept. 9. Jeff Dunham, America’s favorite comic/ventriloquist and the star of Comedy Central’s highest-rated specials, will perform Nov. 6.
