Record number of donors give to Ohio State in FY15
A record 237,340 donors supported Ohio State during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2015. Overall, the $405.5 million raised made FY15 the second-largest fundraising year at Ohio State. Meanwhile, the university's But for Ohio State Campaign, concluding next year, continues to exceed expectations, surpassing $2.37 billion against the $2.5 billion goal. "The university community is truly grateful to our donors for the meaningful impact they have on advancing faculty and supporting our students," said President Michael V. Drake.

Ag dean selected as summer commencement speaker
Bruce McPheron, vice president for agricultural administration at Ohio State and dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, will address graduates as the speaker for the summer 2015 commencement. About 1,700 degrees will be awarded during the ceremony, which begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday (8/9) in the Schottenstein Center. McPheron, also an Ohio State alumnus, joined Ohio State in November 2012 after serving for 3 1/2 years as dean of Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences.

Committee to search for next Outreach vice provost
Executive Vice President and Provost Joseph Steinmetz has named a 10-member committee to search for the vice provost for Outreach and Engagement. The committee will be chaired by Vice Provost and Director of University Libraries Carol Diedrichs, and also includes Ola Ahlqvist (Geography), Eric Anderman (Educational Studies), Trevor Brown (John Glenn College of Public Affairs), Ronald Hendrick (FAES), Mark Shanda (Theatre), Natasha Slesnick (Human Sciences), Sarah Thompson (student representative, Social Work), Eric Troy (Student Life) and Kimberly Lambert (Human Resources, ex officio). Associate Vice Provost Stephen Myers will manage the day-to-day operations of the Office of Outreach and Engagement until a vice provost is hired.

A beacon for diversity enhancement
Chief Diversity Officer Valerie Kinloch, College of Education and Human Ecology, is an on- and off-campus beacon for equity and inclusion. A professor of literacy studies and associate chair in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Kinloch interweaves diversity and inclusion into all aspects of her academic and personal life. Kinloch's critical stand to create a space for all young learners was recognized with the Office of Human Resources' 2015 Distinguished Diversity Enhancement Award.

Article touts Physics' welcoming climate for women
Physics postdoctoral researcher Jyoti Katoch documents the specific ways Ohio State's Department of Physics has been working to create a welcoming, supportive atmosphere to build the numbers of women in physics at all levels in an article recently published by the American Physical Society (APS) online.

New greenhouses boost research, competitive edge
The new Williams Hall greenhouse complex on the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center's Wooster campus is more than a replacement for the greenhouse lost to a tornado almost five years ago: It's a state-of-the-art facility that will help advance plant research and strengthen Ohio agriculture. The original Williams Hall greenhouse complex was leveled by a September 2010 tornado that destroyed or damaged many other buildings and more than 1,000 trees at OARDC, the research arm of The Ohio State University's College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. The new greenhouses became operational in November 2014.

Warnick named fellow of Center for Ethics and Education
Bryan Warnick, professor of philosophy of education and associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Education and Human Ecology, has been appointed as one of five inaugural senior fellows by the Center for Ethics and Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It is the first academic center of its kind in the United States.

Traffic and parking
Power washing to close two campus parking garages
CampusParc will close the top two levels of the Neil Avenue Garage at 8 p.m. tonight (7/30) to begin power washing. The garage will then close altogether on Friday (7/31), when the entrance will close at 4 p.m., and all vehicles must exit the garage by 8 p.m. The garage is expected to reopen before rush hour on Monday (8/3).
Later Monday at 10 p.m., CampusParc will initiate rolling deck closures in the Lane Avenue Garage to begin power washing and window cleaning in that facility. Work on this garage is expected to be complete on or before Sunday (8/9). Customers are encouraged to park in Tuttle or Ohio Union Garages during this time. As a reminder, vehicles remaining in these areas after closure are subject to relocation at the owner's expense.

Earth Sciences undergrad research poster session today
Undergraduate students in the School of Earth Sciences who have been pursuing research under faculty direction this summer present their results in a poster session 1-4 p.m. today (7/30) in 291 Mendenhall Laboratory, 125 South Oval Drive. The students are participants in the eighth annual Shell Undergraduate Research Experience internships supported by a donation from Shell Exploration and Production Company. All are welcome to attend the poster session.
