METROS ACCEPTS USC POSITION; VERES TO SERVE AS INTERIM CIO

Interim Chief Information Officer Susan Metros has accepted the position of deputy chief information officer and associate vice provost for technology enhanced learning at the University of Southern California, effective Wednesday (9/12). Michael Veres, who has most recently been serving as Ohio State’s interim senior deputy chief information officer, will assume the role of interim chief information officer. Subject to approval by the Board of Trustees. Veres’ appointment will be effective Thursday (9/13) and will continue during the search for a permanent CIO.

INSTITUTE FOR MATERIALS RESEARCH LECTURE AUG. 31

Robert Chau, an internationally known and distinguished researcher at Intel Corporation, will present the inaugural lecture of the 2007-08 Institute for Materials Research Colloquia from 3-4 p.m. Friday (8/31) in E001 Scott Laboratory. A reception will follow. Chau will receive the 2007 College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Award earlier the same day. The lecture, “Research and Advancement in Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics in the Semiconductor Industry” is open to the entire materials community (faculty, staff and students). Read More >

OHIO STATE PREPARES FOR 2007 HOME FOOTBALL SEASON

Ohio State plays seven home football games this season, beginning with the 2007 season opener at noon on Saturday (9/1), when the Buckeyes host Youngstown State. Changes for this year’s football season include concession stands that will accept credit cards, a taxi stand to help visitors find a cab after the game, and changes in parking. Fan safety and enjoyment are the goal of a number of policies that will affect the game day experience. Those policies involve parking, tailgating and security. Read More >

COLUMBUS CAMPUS GETS NEW CHANNEL LINEUP; BIG TEN NETWORK ON CAMPUS CHANNEL 69

OIT rolled out a new basic channel lineup this week for the Ohio State Columbus campus. The channel lineup includes the new Big Ten Network (channel 69) that launches today (8/30) and ESPNU (channel 35) that becomes available Friday (8/31). Details regarding the change and the complete channel lineup are available online or by contacting OIT at 688-HELP (select option 2).

UNIVERSITY OFFICES CLOSED MONDAY

University offices are closed on Monday (9/3) in recognition of the Labor Day holiday. In addition, on Tuesday (9/4) the university’s summer hours will end and it will resume regular hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

REMOVAL OF STUDENTS' SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS MOVES FORWARD

The Office of the CIO and the University Registrar will remove students' Social Security numbers from transcript reports and class rosters before fall quarter. Faculty and staff with access to BuckeyeLink will observe that the students' SSN on class rosters are replaced by the student's lastname.#. The SSN column is removed from the grade upload display as well. Old advising reports and class rosters containing student SSN information should be properly destroyed or stored on a secured or encrypted device to prevent potential data exposure. FACULTY SOUGHT FOR BUCKEYES BEYOND OHIO

Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience is looking for faculty with out-of-state ties to connect with out-of-state and international first-year students. Interested faculty are invited to attend an informal pizza gathering during fall quarter and talk with first-year students from their area of the country or world. WOSU’S OPEN LINE TO FEATURE STRICKLAND, TIBERI

Gov. Ted Strickland and Congressman Pat Tiberi (12th District of Ohio) will be guests on WOSU 820 AM’s Open Line on Friday (8/31). Tiberi will appear during the 10-11 a.m. hour and Strickland the 11 a.m.-noon hour. During both hours, listeners will have an opportunity to question their elected representatives. Ohio’s elected office holders are regularly invited to appear on Open Line to give updates on public issues and legislative or administrative actions. Read More >

STONE LAB RESEARCHER ON DISCOVERY CHANNEL’S DIRTY JOBS SPECIAL

Kristin Stanford, OSU Stone Lab faculty and resident researcher, will reappear on the Discovery Channel’s top-rated TV program Dirty Jobs at 9 p.m. Monday (9/3) in its 150th Dirty Jobs Extravaganza. The two-hour special will look back at some of the most popular episodes. Stanford’s research on the federally threatened, state-endangered Lake Erie water snake was featured on the show’s Season 2 premiere episode. Details on Stone Lab and a schedule of Dirty Jobs episodes are available online.

APPLY NOW FOR 2007-08 PARKING PERMIT

Faculty, staff and student 2007-08 parking permit applications are now available online at www.tp.osu.edu. The new 2007-08 permit will be required to access all parking areas starting Saturday (9/1).

RALLY FOR WELLNESS HEALTH FAIR SLATED FOR SEPT. 12

The Faculty and Staff Wellness Program and the University Staff Advisory Committee are teaming up to present “Health Fair - Rally for Wellness!” from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday (9/12) at the French Field House. Get your PHA health screening (register online) , grab a free lunch and earn points toward the 2007 Incentive Program for attending the annual health fair and be on hand for the first of two Incentive Program raffle drawings.

MOONLIGHT MADNESS FUNDING AVAILABLE

The Student Wellness Center is accepting applications for funding for fall quarter 2007 Moonlight Madness events. Moonlight Madness provides fun, vibrant, alcohol and drug-free activities for OSU students on Friday nights at RPAC throughout fall, winter and spring quarters. Applications are due Friday (8/31).
