MATERIAL MAY HELP AUTOS TURN HEAT INTO ELECTRICITY

Researchers have invented a new material that will make cars even more efficient, by converting heat wasted through engine exhaust into electricity. In the current issue of the journal Science, they describe a material with twice the efficiency of anything currently on the market. The same technology could work in power generators and heat pumps, said project leader Joseph Heremans, Ohio Eminent Scholar in Nanotechnology at Ohio State. Scientists call such materials thermoelectric materials, and they rate the materials' efficiency based on how much heat they can convert into electricity at a given temperature. Read more >

CLIMATE CHANGE TURNS UP HEAT ON JOURNALISTS

With funding from the McCormick Foundation, the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism and the John Glenn School of Public Affairs have partnered with OSU’s Climate, Water and Carbon Program to host the McCormick Climate Change Conference from Sunday (10/12)-Tuesday (10/14). Top journalists from across the country will visit Ohio State to learn about the science behind rapidly melting glaciers, shifting sea levels and changing water availabilities - and how elected officials plan to respond to such key environmental issues. The Kiplinger Program, one of the nation’s longest-running journalism fellowship programs and a leader in the digital media field, will accept applications from journalists through Monday (9/8). OSU URBAN ARTS SPACE HOSTS DOG DAYS OF AUGUST

The OSU Urban Arts Space, 50 W. Town St. is hosting its Dog Days of August programs at noon Wednesdays, starting on Wednesday (8/6) with Word Works, an OSU Libraries ReadAloud Program. Bring your lunch and listen as author Charlene Fix reads one of Thurber's dog stories and shares her own poetic reflections on dogs. Fix is a professor of English at the Columbus College of Art Design and a member of the House of Toast Poets. POLICY ON HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH RECRUITMENT AVAILABLE ONLINE

A Human Research Protection Program policy, Recruiting Methods, Recruitment Materials, and Participant Compensation, is now available online for investigators performing research with human subjects. This policy outlines issues to consider when designing methods to recruit study participants, developing recruitment materials, and providing compensation to research participants. ARTWORK BEING ACCEPTED FOR STAFF ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBIT

Art work for the 17th Annual Staff Arts and Crafts Exhibit, sponsored by Human Resources and the University Staff and Advisory Committee, is currently being accepted. ADVERTISING DEADLINES APPROACHING FOR RESOURCE GUIDE

onCampus’ annual resource Guide is the best way for advertisers to reach Ohio State faculty, staff and graduate students. The special 60-page edition of the faculty/staff newspaper is published Thursday (9/18), with circulation of 30,000. Twenty-three percent of OSU faculty/staff report keeping the Guide all year long as a resource, and 49 percent hang on to it through autumn quarter. CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON CARING FOR THE HIGH RISK MOTHER AND BABY

The Region IV Perinatal Center is hosting the 17th Annual Region IV Perinatal Conference “Caring for the High Risk Mother and Baby,” on Thursday (9/11) at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Columbus. Topics include caring for the pregnant woman/baby in relation to autoimmune diseases, cancer, hypertension, epilepsy and the treatment of depression.
