MAGAZINE RANKS OHIO AMONG LEADERS IN BIOTECHNOLOGY

Ohio's Third Frontier tech-funding initiative and some of the nation's prominent university research programs, led by Ohio State, have combined to put the state among the tops in the country for biotechnology, a new report says. Ohio was ranked as the best in the Midwest and fourth in the country, tied with Texas, for its bioscience strength, according to Business Facilities magazine, a publication aimed at businesses and organizations looking to open or expand operations. The bioscience industry includes everything from food science and medicine to environmentally sensitive technologies and health-care innovations. Data from the Biotech Industry Organization, Battelle and government statistics were used to determine the rankings. Read the full report

KATZENMEYER NAMED SENIOR VP FOR UNIVERSITY RELATIONS; STEINER IS SENIOR VP FOR GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

President E. Gordon Gee today (8/7) announced that Tom Katzenmeyer, senior vice president of investor, media and community relations for the Limited Brands, will join Ohio State as the senior vice president for University Communications. Curt Steiner, who has served as the university’s senior vice president for University Relations since 2004, will become senior vice president for Government Affairs. Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. ROGERS RECOGNIZED WITH NATIONAL AWARD

Ohio Attorney General Nancy Rogers, OSU faculty member and former dean of the Moritz College of Law, was recognized recently with the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society’s prestigious Alumni Achievement Award at the society’s annual national conference held in Columbus. Rogers was one of only three recipients nationally to be honored for her professional excellence; local, national and international contributions; and for serving as an excellent role model to collegiate Mortar Board members. VOLUNTEER FOR SHINGLES VACCINE RESEARCH STUDY. Doctors are seeking healthy folks between the ages of 50 and 59 to join a research study to evaluate the investigational use of an approved vaccine to prevent shingles, which is also known as herpes zoster, or zoster. CIO SURVEY TO MEASURE DATA PRIVACY ISSUES

Do you shred documents with personal information? How about locking file cabinets when you’re away from your office area? The Office of the CIO wants to know how they can help the university community better protect personal and sensitive information. Faculty and staff are asked to take an online survey to help the data privacy administrator identify the new supports and resources needed at the university. INVITATION TO SCIENCE FACULTY AND STAFF

You are invited to learn how to participate in the Breakfast of Science Champions during the 2008-09 school year. The program brings middle school students from across Ohio to campus to explore science, math and engineering. Organizers of this year’s sessions are seeking additional opportunities for students to learn about science in other areas at Ohio State. EHS OFFERS CHEMICAL REDISTRIBUTION PROGRAM

Environmental Health and Safety’s Chemical Redistribution Program provides usable chemicals to faculty and staff to be used on campus for university related purposes at no cost. Interested persons must register on the Environmental Affairs portion of the EHS Web site to view the available chemicals. As requests are filled, they will be delivered within a week. AUG. 11 FINAL REGISTRATION DAY FOR ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBIT

Human Resources and USAC will accept entries for the 17th Annual Staff Arts and Crafts Exhibit in 105 Bricker Hall from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday (8/11). The exhibit will open in Bricker Hall on Thursday (8/21) and will be on display until Sunday (10/19). VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR CONVOCATION 2008

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience is seeking faculty, staff and students to fill a number of volunteer roles, from cheerers in Ohio Stadium to greeters and program distributors at St. John Arena, during Convocation 2008, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday (9/22). Volunteers are needed for two shifts: from 9-11 a.m. at St. John Arena and from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Ohio Stadium. RESERVED RV PARKING AVAILABLE FOR OSU FOOTBALL SEASON

For the first time, all RV football parking on campus this year will be sold in advance through the Athletics Department Web site. The policy is part of a program to improve RV parking availability and reduce congestion. There is no day-of-game RV parking available. Spaces are all pre-assigned, and are held for the permit holder until 90 minutes prior to kick off. This will be the only method of ordering; no walkup or phone orders will be accepted. ANNUAL MEDICAL ALUMNI REUNION WEEKEND SEPT. 5-7

The 55th Annual Medical Alumni Reunion Weekend will be held Friday (9/5)-Sunday (9/7) in conjunction with the OSU vs. Ohio University football game.
