OSU STUDY SUGGESTS NEED FOR LESS BIASED MEASURE OF SCHOOLS

Up to three-quarters of U.S. schools deemed failing based on achievement test scores would receive passing grades if evaluated using a less biased measure, a new study suggests. OSU researchers developed a new method of measuring school quality based on schools' actual impact on learning. The impact measure more accurately gauges what is going on in the classroom, which is the way schools really should be evaluated if we're trying to determine their effectiveness, said Douglas Downey, co-author of the study and OSU professor of sociology. Downey conducted the study with Paul von Hippel, a research statistician, and Melanie Hughes, a doctoral student. Read more >

WOSU'S 24OSU TO AIR ON BIG TEN NETWORK

“24OSU,” a sunrise to sunset exploration of the activities, people and facilities of Ohio State, will air on the Big Ten Network at 5 p.m. Thursday (8/14), 5 a.m. Monday (8/18), and 11 a.m. Wednesday (8/20). Starting with a 6 a.m. ride on the Olentangy River with the women's crew team and ending with late night nanotechnology research in the physics building, viewers are escorted on a visual tour by students, faculty and staff. The episode features the Dance Department, nanotechnology research, the Biological Sciences Greenhouse, Food Services, the women's crew team, and the Lantern's printing facility. VOLUNTEER FOR SHINGLES VACCINE RESEARCH STUDY. Doctors are seeking healthy folks between the ages of 50 and 59 to join a research study to evaluate the investigational use of an approved vaccine to prevent shingles, which is also known as herpes zoster, or zoster. HERNESS NAMED PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL DENTAL SOCIETY

Scott Herness, professor and chair of Dentistry's Division of Oral Biology, was recently selected as the president-elect of the Association for Chemoreception Sciences, the premiere professional society for olfaction and taste research in the U.S. Herness, an advocate and longtime advisor for AChemS, has secured two grants as principle and co-principle investigator for research using neurophysiology and molecular biology to investigate the function of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides in human taste buds. LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. CENTER FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH, OSU CCTS REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS

The OSU Center for Women's Health, in collaboration with the OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science has announced a Request for Applications to fund research to advance its understanding of the complexities unique to women’s health and disease. Designed to initiate pilot funding and support new research teams, three awards will be given, not to exceed $40,000 each. Any area of women’s health will be considered and junior investigators are especially encouraged to submit proposals. COLLEGE OF LAW SEEKING MOCK TRIAL JURORS

Frank A. Ray, adjunct professor, Moritz College of Law is seeking faculty and staff to serve as volunteer jurors for his trial class. Volunteers are needed for the simulated voir dire exercises that have been scheduled for Ray's course for Monday (8/25), Wednesday (8/27) and Wednesday (9/3). onCampus’ annual resource Guide is the best way for advertisers to reach Ohio State faculty, staff and graduate students. The special 60-page edition of the faculty/staff newspaper is published Thursday (9/18), with circulation of 30,000. Twenty-three percent of OSU faculty and staff report keeping the Guide all year long as a resource, and 49 percent hang on to it through autumn quarter. The advertising deadline is Thursday (8/21). GOLF OUTING FUNDS TO HELP RESTORE EMS HEARTMOBILE

The Ohio State Health Network is hosting a golf outing at the OSU Scarlet Golf Course to benefit OSU Medical Center Emergency Medical Services and the restoration of the heartmobile.
