U.S. NEWS: OHIO STATE AMONG NATION’S BEST COLLEGES

Ohio State has been named one of the “best up and coming universities” in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The publication’s 2009 edition of America’s Best Colleges released Friday (8/22) ranked Ohio State 14th among national universities in the new “up and coming” category, which is based on schools that have recently made the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities. In addition, the university again ranked 19th among the publication’s ranking of the nation’s top 50 public universities. The publication also lists three Ohio State initiatives as outstanding examples of programs linked to student success: First Year Experience, Learning Communities and Service Learning programs. HEALTH INSURANCE AND LONG TERM CARE WORKSHOP. Should I buy long term care insurance? What health benefits can I expect from Medicare and the PERS/STRS/SERS pension plans? OSU PROFESSOR TO RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS ERIKSSON PRIZE

Laurence V. Madden, professor and associate chair of the Department of Plant Pathology, will receive the 2008 Jakob Eriksson Prize for Plant Pathology on Friday (8/29) at the ninth International Congress of Plant Pathology in Torino, Italy. The prestigious prize is awarded every five years. Madden, a leading authority on plant disease epidemiology, was also named the 2008 Fisher Lecturer at Rothamsted Research, an arable crops center in Harpenden, United Kingdom, earlier this year. His work includes development of statistical models and grower tools for plant disease forecasting and crop loss assessment. Read more >

OHIO STATE TO FLEX ARTISTIC MUSCLES ALL OVER TOWN

Art connoisseurs are about to focus heaps of attention upon Ohio State as the university flexes its artistic muscles with some heavy-hitting events all over town. Next month, the Wexner Center will unveil the only American showing of the much-heralded exhibition Andy Warhol: Other Voices, Other Rooms. Almost simultaneously, the Columbus Museum of Art will display a treasure chest of artifacts from university archives in Objects of Wonder from the Ohio State University. Finally, the OSU Urban Arts Space is set to display works by Sid Chafetz, famed professor emeritus. Read more >

CIO SURVEY TO MEASURE DATA PRIVACY ISSUES

The Office of the CIO wants to know how they can help the university community better protect personal and sensitive information. Faculty and staff are asked to take an online survey to help the data privacy administrator identify new supports and resources needed at the university. WEX DRIVE-IN OUTDOOR FILM FEST DOWNTOWN AUG. 28

The Wexner Center for the Arts takes its Wex Drive-in Outdoor Film Fest downtown for the first time, with a free open-air screening at dusk of The Talk of the Town (1942), a romantic comedy about justice starring Cary Grant and Jean Arthur, projected onto a huge screen on the Ohio Statehouse lawn (west plaza). CALL FOR PAPERS: AFRICA IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION

The Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center invites the submission of abstracts and panel proposals for possible inclusion at its symposium on Africa in the Age of Globalization, set for Friday (10/17) at the African American and African Studies Community Extension Center, 905 Mount Vernon Ave. The symposium will examine the potential benefits and costs of globalization, particularly in Africa and the role it has played in Africa’s present state of affairs. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR CONVOCATION 2008 IN SEPTEMBER

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience is seeking faculty, staff and students to fill a number of volunteer roles, from cheerers in Ohio Stadium to greeters and program distributors at St. John Arena, during Convocation 2008, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday (9/22). Volunteers are needed for two shifts: from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at St. John Arena and from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Ohio Stadium. To volunteer, RSVP with your shift availability by Monday (9/8) to convocation@osu.edu. You will receive your volunteer assignment and more details in mid September. Contact: 247-4341
