Ohio State chemist wins Presidential Early Career Award
John M. Herbert is among 100 scientists and engineers honored with the 2009 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest award that a beginning researcher can receive in the United States. Herbert was recognized for his work in developing novel algorithms for the simulation of electronically-excited states consisting of hundreds of atoms and for applying these techniques to the characterization of photochemical processes in DNA, and for his work in developing open-ended research projects to be integrated into undergraduate teaching laboratories. Plant pathologist recognized for excellence in Extension outreach and education
An Ohio State Extension plant pathologist has been awarded the American Phytopathological Society Excellence in Extension Award, in part for furthering national educational efforts on soybean rust. Anne Dorrance, an associate professor with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, will accept the award during the APS annual meeting in Portland, Ore., this month. Read more:

WOSU awarded two Emmy Awards
WOSU Public Media received Emmy Awards for two of its programs from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Winners were announced recently at the 45th Annual Midwestern Regional Emmy Awards ceremony in Lexington, Ky. The two WOSU winners included Best of ArtZine ’08 and iMix. Read more >
Faculty Compensation and Benefits Committee report available on Senate web site
The 2008-09 report of the Faculty Compensation and Benefits Committee has been posted online at http://senate.osu.edu/committees/FCBC/FCBC.html. In the report, OSU’s 2007-08 salary increases, as well as its record over the last 10 years, are compared with those in the CIC, AAU and a select group of “peer” institutions. The comparisons are then adjusted for differences in living costs and salary increases for 2007-08 and are broken down by department for total and continuing faculty. Other features include a clarification of phased retirement options and the fee structures of the various 403B plans, and the FCBC’s response to Provost Alutto’s memo: Principles for Faculty Reward Systems in a High Performance Academic Culture. Global Institute focuses on international education
The five Area Studies Centers and the Office of International Affairs at Ohio State have collaborated with other educators around the state to present the 2009 Global Institute, a three-day workshop for teachers in grades K-12, being held this week on the campus of Kent State University. The workshop provides educators with a broader view of how they can connect their students with classrooms and experts around the world. Ohio State solar house moves closer to completion
The university’s solar house, under construction near Ohio Stadium, is a step closer to completion after student workers installed a new insulation and air sealing system from Ohio-based Owens Corning. The EnergyCompleteTM with Flexible Seal Technology system is a critical feature in the solar house because it reduces air leakage, which is a major source of energy loss. The house is Ohio State's entry in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, a competition among 20 universities that takes place in October in Washington D.C. OSU to host personalized health care national conference
Registration is now open for the second annual personalized health care national conference, set for Thursday (10/1) in the Biomedical Research Tower. Leroy Hood, Ralph Snyderman, and other academic leaders, industry experts, government policy makers and healthcare providers from Ohio State and around the nation will discuss innovations in personalized medicine research and the role of academic medical centers in adapting clinical and translational science into a value-based, patient-centric healthcare system. Classified Civil Service rules for reduction in force to be updated
The Office of Human Resources has drafted revised CCS rules related to reduction in force (RIF), including: Reduction in Force; Definitions of Terms; and Procedure for Adoption, Amendment or Rescission of Rules. Exhibits commemorate the fall of Berlin Wall
Germanic Languages and Literatures is hosting two touring photography exhibits commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall: Icons of a Border Installation: Photographic Search for Traces in Today’s Berlin and Ortszeit/Local Time, to be on display in the Hagerty Hall foyer Monday (8/10)-Monday (9/21). The official opening is Tuesday (8/18) at 5:25 p.m., and features a lecture by professor Katharina Gerstenberger (University of Cincinnati) titled “The Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall at Potsdamer Platz.” The exhibits are free and open. Summer Commencement academic processional information
All faculty planning to march in the academic processional at Summer Commencement on Sunday (8/30) in the Schottenstein Center should notify their college dean's office by Friday (8/21). On commencement day, faculty registered to participate in the processional should assemble by 12:30 p.m. in cap and gown in the west concourse of the Schottenstein Center between Sections 110/110 and 111/111, directly across from the southwest lobby. BuckeyeBar now located in Thompson Library
The BuckeyeBar, now located at 60A Thompson Memorial Library, offers one-on-one technology consultation and problem solving. Faculty, students and staff can get help connecting to Ohio State's wireless network, diagnosing a sluggish computer, addressing virus problems or answering questions about IT. The IT Service Desk, which provides support for e-mail and wireless accounts, cellular phones (OSU Wireless), site-licensed software, identity maintenance, classroom services support, and bill payments for OIT services, will remain at 025 Central Classroom Building. Drawings & Paintings on display at OSU Marion Aug. 10-31
Drawings & Paintings by Marion artist Jay Johnson will be on display Monday (8/10)-Monday (8/31) at the Wayne and Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery at Ohio State Marion. The photos were taken by Vladimir Steffel, OSU emeritus professor of History. An artist reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. Monday (8/10). The gallery is open weekdays during normal university business hours. Molly the Pony to visit Ohio State Aug. 6; Moore to lecture
Molly the Pony, one of the world's only prosthesis-wearing ponies, will visit the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine from 4:30-8 p.m. Thursday (8/6). Rustin Moore, Bud and Marilyn Jenne Professor and chair of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, will present "It's All About Molly" at 5 and 7 p.m. in the Wexner Auditorium in the Veterinary Medicine Academic Building. The event is free and open to the public. Meet Molly and her owner on the lawn outside before and after the presentation by Moore, who performed the rare and difficult surgery.
