In their impressive debut feature film, the Ross brothers provide a lyrical portrait of this small Midwestern town. History department leads partnership to aid Ohio social studies teachers

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a grant of $920,934 to a partnership between Ohio State's Department of History, the Ohio Historical Society and Tri-County Educational Center to focus on improving the quality of American history. The grant provides academic training for fourth-eighth grade social studies and history teachers in Ashland, Holmes and Wayne counties. Ohio State's History Teaching Institute, the outreach arm of the university's Department of History, will oversee the program. Student fellowship named after OARDC Associate Director Benfield

An international livestock disease research program has created the David A. Benfield Student Travel Fellowship, which recognizes the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center’s associate director and renowned virologist for his contributions to food-animal health research. The fellowship will support international doctoral students participating in the 2009 Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome International Symposium, to be held Friday (12/4)-Saturday (12/5) in Chicago. Scientific misconduct, and the punishments for scholars found guilty of it, is the topic for the latest entry at the university's On Research blog, produced by the Office of Research Communications. Participants needed for new OSU Libraries web site evaluation

The OSU Libraries web site has been redesigned and faculty, staff and students are invited to evaluate the new design. Participants will test use the redesigned web site in individual usability tests that will take about 35-40 minutes. The testing will be conducted at the Digital Union or your office (faculty/staff) from Monday (8/10)-Friday (8/21). All participants will receive a $5 gift card as compensation for their time. Registration for Annual Staff Art and Crafts Exhibit starts today

Human Resources and USAC will be accepting entries for the 18th Annual Staff Arts and Crafts Exhibit in 105 Bricker Hall from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. today (8/6) and Friday (8/7), and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday (8/10). The exhibit will open in Bricker Hall on Thursday (8/20) and will be on display until Friday (10/2). Details regarding artwork requirements are available at http://hr.osu.edu/special/artscrafts. Aug. 7: Kirwan Institute hosts opportunity mapping lecture

“Opportunity mapping” uses Geographic Information Systems to map the location of community resources such as schools, health care and transportation in relation to populations from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity will discuss some of its recent work, “The Massachusetts Opportunity Initiative” at a brownbag lecture at noon Friday (8/7) in 423 Mendenhall Laboratory. Kirwan Institute presenters include Jason Reece, senior researcher and Samir Gambhir, GIS analyst. The campus community is invited. Reservations are not needed. Summer Institute on Course Design Aug. 17-21

A Summer Institute on Course Design offered by the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching will take place from 9 a.m.-noon Monday (8/17)-Friday (8/21) in the Younkin Success Center. It is designed to provide the tools, the time, and the collegial support to really dig in and design or re-design a course. At the end of the week you will have created the basic structure of the course, including plans for a syllabus, assignments, assessment tools, and a course outline. Register online:

Aug. 20: King to present Ethics and the 21st Century Leader

The OSU Leadership Center’s 21st Century Leadership series continues on Thursday (8/20) as Jeff King, director of the OSU Leadership Center and OSU associate professor, presents “Ethics and the 21st Century Leader.” The session will look at the foundation for ethical leadership; explore reasons for ethical failures in the workplace; identify strategies for leaders and organizations to create an ethical workplace culture; discuss two ethical decision making models; and use an ethical decision making model on various workplace scenarios. Faculty and staff volunteers are needed to serve as advisors to Ohio State’s 950-plus student organizations. Student organization advisors have the opportunity to work with student leaders and members in a variety of capacities. There are a set of required duties as well as many that are negotiable between you and the student organization. Aug. 8: OSU's Eye and Ear Institute Open House

Get an early look at the OSU Medical Center Eye and Ear Institute during an open house for faculty, staff and the community from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday (8/8) at 915 Olentangy River Road. Bring your family and friends to see the new five-story, 137,000 square foot facility. Refreshments will be provided and parking is free. The institute combines a number of health services in a single location, including: Ophthalmology, otolaryngology/ENT, plastic surgery, Center for Women’s Health, Hand Center and Outpatient Surgery Center.
