Ohio State recognized for services for veterans

Ohio State is one of the nation’s top institutions for veterans, according to G.I. Jobs magazine. The publication ranks Ohio State’s Columbus campus as a “Military Friendly School” for 2010. The honor places Ohio State in the top 15 percent of all colleges. The ranking recognizes Ohio State’s military-friendly policies, efforts and results to recruit and retain military and veteran students. Aug. 24 open forum to introduce candidate for director of University Libraries

The search committee for the director of University Libraries will host an open forum to introduce faculty, staff and students to Lorraine Haricombe, a candidate for the position, from 3:30-4:45 p.m. Monday (8/24) in the West Reading Room of the newly renovated Thompson Library. Haricombe has been Dean of Libraries at the University of Kansas since 2006, and was Dean of University Libraries at Bowling Green State University from 2001-06. Pradhan receives NNSA award for plasma project

The National Nuclear Security Administration on Friday (8/14) announced that it has awarded $396,000 to Anil Pradhan, OSU professor of astronomy, to serve as principal investigator for a project titled “Laboratory Tests of Stellar Interior Opacity Models.” NNSA awarded grants to 28 researchers from 18 states. The award is part of NNSA’s program in High Energy Density Laboratory Plasmas, a joint program with grants funded by NNSA and the Department of Energy Office of Science. Aug. 17-21: Rec Sports facilities free during Staff Appreciation Week

Recreational Sports supports Staff Appreciation Week by welcoming any Ohio State employee to a free week from Monday (8/17)-Friday (8/21). Any person with a valid university ID is invited to use the recreational facilities at no cost, including the RPAC and RPAC Aquatic Center; the Adventure Recreation Center, Climbing Center and Outdoor Adventure Center on West Campus; and the Jesse Owens Recreation Centers. Today: IRB forms help session

Investigators, graduate students and research staff are encouraged to attend a help session on IRB applications from 3-4 p.m. today (8/19) in 113 Research Foundation. Office of Responsible Research Practices staff will provide an overview of the Initial Review of Human Subjects Research application and will also answer questions regarding other IRB forms. This session is targeted to researchers who submit materials to the Biomedical and Cancer IRBs, but is open to all human subjects researchers. Road work alert: College Road, 18th, 19th and Neil avenues

Preparation for the pavement removal and replacement work will continue today (8/19) on 18th Avenue and College Road. Through traffic will be permitted on both roads. On Thursday (8/20), the courtyard behind Morrison Tower and the 19th Avenue loading dock areas near Haskett Hall will also be closed. The 4-H exit drive and parking will be closed Thursday (8/20)-Saturday (8/22). Neil Avenue to remain closed for pavement restoration

Neil Avenue will remain closed between Tuttle Park Place and Lane Avenue for pavement restoration. Tuttle Park Place between Lane and Woodruff avenues will remain open providing access to the Blackwell and the ROTC parking lot, however, the access drive to the ROTC parking lot via Tuttle Park Place will be closed on Monday (8/24) and Tuesday (8/25). Alternate access to the ROTC parking lot is located on Lane Avenue. Deliveries, emergency vehicles and ADA parking will be maintained. All streets, including the Woodruff/Tuttle intersection, will be open to through traffic on Monday (8/31). Contact: mailto:fod_communications@osu.edu

Marotta Hour: Wasteland Jazz Unit at the OSU Urban Arts Space

Visit the OSU Urban Arts Space from 7-8 p.m. Thursday (8/20) and check out new sounds, curated by local musician and international composer Larry Marotta. This month features Matt Davignon, Wasteland Jazz Unit from Cincinnati, which combines acoustic instruments with electronic amplification. Controller’s Office offers Aug. 26 accounts receivable workshop

The Controller’s Office is offering a workshop, “Accounts Receivable & Accounts Receivable Collection Services” from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday (8/26) in 231 Mount Hall on West Campus. The session will explain how to proceed when providing goods and services on credit, and is recommended for any university employee who works with earnings funds that extend credit to external customers. Aug. 26: OSU Airport/MedFlight Red Cross Blood Drive

Summer is trauma season and the need for all blood types is critical. The OSU Airport/MedFlight Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Wednesday (8/26) at MedFlight, 2827 W. Dublin Granville Road. Donors will receive AMC movie tickets and a chance to win $100 gas cards. Tours of the facility will be provided upon request.
