Overseas trip helps affirm India as strong partner for OSU
A substantial part of President Gordon Gee’s plan to move Ohio State from excellence to eminence is an increased focus on the university’s global activities. The President’s and Provost’s Council on Strategic Internationalization presented a set of specific strategies in June to enhance Ohio State’s already-substantial presence around the world, and Gee wasted little time implementing the strategy. He recently returned from a 12-day trip to India, one of the countries in which the council advised an increased focus. Read more:

$3 million grant funds EHE study of substance abuse treatment
With a new five-year grant for $3 million from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, College of Education and Human Ecology researchers will be among the first to study the benefit of involving adolescents ages 11-15 in their single mothers’ substance abuse treatment. Natasha Slesnick, associate professor of human development and family science, leads the project. Co-PIs are Suzanne Bartle-Haring, professor; Michael Glassman, associate professor; and Sarah Schoppe-Sullivan, assistant professor, all with HDFS. Slesnick has received a total of $9.2 million in the past five years to study ways to improve the lives of people experiencing drug and substance abuse. Today: Open house, dedication at OARDC's new Feedstock Processing Facility
A dedication ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. today (8/27) at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center’s new Feedstock Processing Research Facility, 2605 Selby Road in Wooster. Open houses are set for noon-1:30 p.m. today for the campus community, and 6-7:30 p.m. for the public. The $5.5 million state-of-the-art building will help increase the quality, nutritional value and mixing precision of feeds for OARDC’s internationally recognized livestock and poultry research programs, and provide the opportunity for research and development in the processing of oils and proteins from field crops for innovative applications in bio-based fuels, chemicals, polymers and materials. The new Student Consolidated Services Center, which opened its doors in June, supports the mission of Ohio State by putting students first. The staff provides integrated front-line support and advising for Student Financial Aid and the offices of the Registrar, Bursar and Minority Affairs. Aug. 29: Campus streets to temporarily close for Pelotonia
As Pelotonia makes it way through the streets of the OSU campus on Saturday (8/29), portions of Olentangy River Road, Campus Loop Road, Cannon Drive, King Avenue and Neil Avenue will be closed around 7 a.m. for a short period of time. During the closure, officers will be stationed at key intersections to help manage traffic flows. Medical Center staff working first shift who park in the Polo Lots or use Cannon Drive to get to other parking areas on the Medical Center campus, should plan to approach campus from the east using Neil Avenue or find an alternate parking location. ORRP office hours for help with IRB submissions
The Office of Responsible Research Practices holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. Sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies and review procedures. The next session for biomedical/cancer researchers will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday (9/2) in 635 Fry Hall. Chadwick Arboretum Plant Sale Sept. 3-4
From fall-blooming perennials to colorful mums and pansies, gardeners will have plenty to choose from at Ohio State's Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens Fall Plant Sale, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday (9/3) and Friday (9/4) in front of Howlett Hall. Free parking is available in lots adjacent to Howlett Hall. Horticultural experts will be on hand to answer gardening questions and concerns. Women in Appalachia Conference planned for Sept. 9
Empowering women from Appalachia is the focus of a conference scheduled for 9:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m. Wednesday (9/9) at the OSU South Centers in Piketon, 1864 Shyville Road. The conference will focus on educational programs designed to nurture the body, mind and spirit. Female entrepreneurs will share ideas about starting and maintaining a female-owned business in Appalachia. Registration is $25; bring a food or clothing item for charity and save $5.
