First piece of steel goes up at James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute
Monday (8/8) marked an important milestone for the construction team as they put in place the first piece of steel for the new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and critical care expansion. The building is expected to be topped out in late winter or early spring of 2012 and opened in late 2014. Visit the Expansion blog and view a video clip of the activity. Long-Term Care Workshop – What You Need To Know. LTC Financial Partners, LLC, the premier national network of professional long-term care specialists, is hosting an educational workshop on long term care at the Fawcett Center on Tuesday (8/16). Topics include at-home, assisted-living, and nursing-care options; financing strategies; and the new Ohio Partnership Program which can help families protect assets. Sharing a student's Global Gateway experience
Darrilyn Macklin, a first-year student majoring in Chinese, is back from her first study abroad trip to China. She joined 12 other students and East Asian Languages professor Mark Bender on a month-long "Global Gateway" program. They explored the rural and urban cultures in southwest China based at the Southwest University for Nationalities in Chengdu. Know a teen in love? Seeking participants for a teen relationship study. Adolescent couples between the ages of 15-18 are sought to participate in a student-led research study examining adolescent romantic relationships. Couples will be asked to complete a one-time interview lasting approximately 1 hour. Participants will be compensated for their time. Archivist publishes first comprehensive OSU history in 50 years
For more than 30 years, Rai Goerler stood watch over the Ohio State University Archives, tending the official "memory" of the university and making sure its roughly two million photos and manuscripts are accessible for research. He fielded countless questions about university history before his retirement at the end of 2010. Writing a book about it seemed the logical next step.

OSU is conducting a clinical research study of an investigational oral medication for birth control. Qualified participants will receive at no cost for up to 12 months: periodic gynecological exams, investigational oral birth control medication. Females that are 18-40 years of age, sexually active, and have regular menstrual cycles may be eligible for participation. Compensation is available for time and travel.

Today: Online Student Evaluation of Instruction for full-term classes activated
The Student Evaluation of Instruction is Ohio State's most widely-used method to collect student ratings of instructors. Students access the evaluations through their class schedules on the web. Detailed information about SEIs was e-mailed to instructors on Monday (8/8) and to students on Wednesday (8/10). SEIs cannot be altered or deleted once they are submitted. Students can access SEIs until they receive a grade in the class or until 11:59 p.m. Monday (8/22), whichever comes first.

Stone Lab, Ohio State's island campus on Lake Erie, continues its summer lecture series today (8/11) as Laura Powell, assistant director of the Ohio EPA, presents "The Reality of Public Policy and the Environment." Matt Ogborn at the OSU Urban Arts Space Aug. 18
Visit the OSU Urban Arts Space from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday (8/18) to see this month's Marotta Hour performer Matt Ogborn. Through electronics, he uses his viola to build large, lush swaths of sound. Columbus poet John Bennett and series curator Larry Marotta (guitar) open with a short set of words and music. Hear some of the most cutting-edge musicians and composers from Columbus and beyond before the series concludes in September 2011. Free and open to all.

Learning Collaboration Studio available for autumn classes
The Learning Collaboration Studio is actively seeking faculty and instructors to reserve the room for classes and events to fill out the autumn schedule. The LCS is a reconfigurable learning space complete with dual-boot laptops, SMART Podium, and on-site staff. There is no charge and the Office of the Chief Information Officer sponsors instructor orientation sessions to provide insight on how to make use of the space. Deadline for requests is Friday (8/19).

Gateway 2 Management training/workshop Aug. 17
A new Gateway 2 Management (G2M) session, "Building a Culture of Coaching" begins Wednesday (8/17) from 2-4:30 p.m. G2M is offered to managers who want to strengthen and build their coaching skills and contribute to achieving the university's goals. Participants must commit to attending all three Wednesday classroom sessions: (8/17), (8/24) and (8/31) and completing coursework on their own.
