Students First

Del Rio discovers passion for fieldwork in the forests of Honduras

Annelise Del Rio, a second year Honors Collegium student, spent six weeks this summer in the forests of Honduras serving as a research assistant in the cloud forests of Honduras with the conservation organization Operation Wallacea. She spent the first month in Cusuco National Park assisting scientists with their biodiversity research, conducting point counts, mist netting, and banding, and doing population surveys of reptiles and amphibians and chytrid testing of frogs.

She spent the last two weeks on the island of Cayos Cochinos off the coast of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea, where she received her open water scuba diving certification and helped conduct population and genetics surveys of the endemic Hog Island boa constrictors.

"I had an incredible trip, saw amazing wildlife and the beautiful landscapes of Honduras, but most importantly I learned that I love doing fieldwork," Del Rio said.

Students First is a new feature intended to promote the accomplishments, community service and research work of students at Ohio State, either individually or collectively. For details or to submit a potential article, contact editor Randy Gammage at gammage.2@osu.edu.
