Wexner Medical Center one of first in U.S. to implant MRI-safe spinal cord stimulator

Neurosurgeons at the Wexner Medical Center are among the first in the United States to successfully implant an MRI-safe spinal cord stimulator to help patients suffering from chronic back or limb pain. Neurosurgeons Ali Rezai and Milind Deogaonkar performed the surgery Monday (8/5) to help relieve intense foot pain due to a peripheral neuropathy that 78-year-old John Garvin of Worthington has suffered for more than 20 years. Do you know your five strengths? According to the Gallup Organization, "we spend too much time focusing on our weaknesses, trying to make them stronger rather than recognizing our strengths." When you focus on your weaknesses, you miss out on utilizing what you do best for your organization. Join Beth Flynn of the OSU Leadership Center for this workshop on Wednesday (8/28).

New coating may help joint replacements bond better with bone

Broken bones and joint replacements may someday heal faster, thanks to an unusual coating for medical implants under development at Ohio State. Researchers, led by Sheikh Akbar, professor of materials science and engineering, (left photo) have found that bone cells grow and reproduce faster on a textured surface than they do on a smooth one — and they grow best when they can cling to a microscopic shag carpet made of tiny metal oxide wires. The co-author of the study is Derek Hansford, (right photo) associate professor of biomedical engineering and materials science and engineering.
