Pelotonia 2013
A passion for fighting cancer that stretches a hundred miles
After months of training and fundraisin for Pelotonia 13, the fifth installment of the annual grassroots bicycle tour that raises millions of dollars for cancer research at the OSUCCC – James, thousands of cyclists hit the road as early as 6 a.m. Saturday (8/10) to complete varying distances. This year's event featured more than 6,700 riders and more than 3,200 virtual riders on assorted routes between central Ohio and Gambier, Ohio, the home to Kenyon College.
The 2013 version of Team Buckeye — the official superpeloton (riding group) of Ohio State — included more than 1,200 riders, 530 virtual riders and 117 volunteers. Money raised by Pelotonia goes to such areas as student fellowships for cancer research, Idea Grants to teams of faculty cancer researchers, purchases of sophisticated equipment for use by researchers, clinical trials support, and the recruitment and retention of brilliant cancer scientists to the OSUCCC – James.

What color is your night light? It may affect your mood
When it comes to some of the health hazards of light at night, a new study suggests that the color of the light can make a big difference. The findings may have important implications for humans, particularly those whose work on night shifts makes them susceptible to mood disorders, said Randy Nelson, co-author of the study and OSU professor of neuroscience and psychology. The other co-author is Tracy Bedrosian, a former graduate student at Ohio State who is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Salk Institute.
