Barcodes reduce medication errors in emergency departments

 A study recently conducted at the Wexner Medical Center in collaboration with the College of Pharmacy shows the use of barcode-assisted medication administration technology significantly reduces errors in an emergency care setting. While this technology has proven to help reduce medication errors among hospitalized patients, it is not routinely used in emergency departments because many are not fully integrated with electronic medical records. Susan Moffatt-Bruce, chief quality and patient safety officer at the medical center, is senior author of the study.

Ohio State Board of Trustees to meet Aug. 28-30

The university’s Board of Trustees and its committees will meet Wednesday (9/28)-Friday (8/30). Meetings on Wednesday and Thursday take place at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau Federation 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive. The meeting on Friday begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Ohio Union. First Things First: Staffing your Research Team

Staffing your lab with the right people is one of the most important things you can do to ensure the success of your research. The DHLRI Education Committee and the College of Medicine Office of Postdoctoral Researcher are hosting Larry Schlesinger and a diverse panel of faculty for the first of the 3-part series Establishing Your Research Program - Managing Personnel. USAC Staff Tailgate Aug. 28

The University Staff Advisory Committee is kicking off the new school year and a new football season with the USAC Staff Tailgate on Wednesday (8/28) at the Ohio Union’s west plaza along College Road. Join your fellow staff members from noon-1 p.m. A free lunch (hot dog, chips, and drink) will be provided to the first 400 attendees, and all will enjoy games, a photo booth, and other treats.

Bell National Resource Center to host lecture Sept. 17

The Bell National Resource Center is hosting a presentation by Townsand Price-Spratlen, associate professor of sociology on Tuesday (9/17) at 6 p.m. in the MLK Lounge of the Hale Black Cultural Center (154 W. 12th Ave.). It is based on his research and work with a non-profit organization, founded by former felons that have improved the life outcomes of former felons, their families, and communities. The event is free and open to the public.

Trauma and neglect on the developing brain, Sept 24-25

Join the discussion, “Using neuroscience to achieve positive outcomes for children of all ages and stages of development,” featuring international expert Bruce Perry on Tuesday (9/24) from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Ohio Union or Wednesday (9/25) from 9 a.m.-noon at the Fawcett Center. Perry, The ChildTrauma Academy and Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, consulted on traumatized children in the Columbine school shootings and the Sandy Hook Elementary school shootings.
