Headline newsNEW UNIVERSITY EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION PLANOhio State has a number of ways to communicate with faculty, staff, students
and parents in the event of an urgent situation. These include a variety of
notification vehicles such as WOSU AM, OSU Today e-mail, the Ohio State Web
site, and local media outlets. New this year, the university has created a
text message alert system for the public to stay informed of potential emergencies.
Faculty, students, staff, and parents are encouraged to register their cell
phone numbers with the OSU Department of Public Safety. To learn more and to

INITIATIVE BRIDGES RURAL OHIO’S DIGITAL DIVIDEThese days, the small water tower in rural Vinton, Ohio (population 324) helps
deliver more than water. Thanks to the Connecting Rural Ohio Wireless Neighborhood
Project, a collaborative initiative bringing Internet connectivity to Appalachian
communities, a stand of antennae bristling atop the water tank makes the Internet
accessible to most Vinton homes. For residents without a wireless modem at
home, there's a community learning center in Town Hall, a former one-room schoolhouse

CLIMATE CHANGE DISCUSSION AT FAWCETT OCT. 4With support from the Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs,
the Byrd Polar Research Center is offering the final in a series of evening
forums to engage the public with discussions about the implications of climate
change. Representatives from Honda of America, American Electric Power and
the Air Transportation Association will present the perspectives of business
and industry in a panel discussion format at 7 p.m. in the Fawcett Center,
followed by a 45-minute question and answer period facilitated by Andy Keeler,
OSU faculty member from the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. The event

Human Resources are offering faculty and staff a variety of workshops designed

Children Doesn’t Work: Verbal vs. Kinetic Learners,” from noon-1
p.m. Wednesday (10/3), and Eldercare Panel of Experts from 11:30 a.m.-1:30

on Customized Events). PLAN AHEAD TO AVOID STUDENT MOVE-IN TRAFFIC SEPT. 13, 16Faculty and staff should be aware that traffic and parking on campus will
be severely restricted on Sunday (9/16), when approximately 5,000 students
move into residence halls. Plan to avoid being on campus that day if possible.
There also will be traffic congestion in residence hall areas in the afternoon
and evening of Thursday (9/13), when about 1,200 Ohio State Welcome Leaders
arrive. Read More > OPERS RETIREMENT FORUM SEPT. 11Human Resources and Ohio Public Employees Retirement System are offering an
on-campus forum from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday (9/11) in 400AB Prior Health Sciences
Library in an ongoing effort to educate and help eligible staff with their
decisions regarding available retirement choices under OPERS. The seminar is
designed for staff who have been at the university for less than 180 days.
