TARGETED THERAPY, SURGERY OFFERS CANCER PATIENTS NEW HOPE

Ohio State’s James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is extending the lives of some colorectal cancer patients with metastases only to the liver by devising personalized targeted treatment approaches. In many cases, these patients have had tumors that most modern medical textbooks define as inoperable. But major advances in chemotherapy, local ablative approaches and surgical techniques over the last five years have greatly improved the possibility of cure for 5 to 10 percent of these patients, says Mark Bloomston, surgical oncologist at The James who specializes in liver and pancreas malignancies. OSU ARCHIVES OFFERS NEW RECORDS MANAGEMENT WEB PAGE

OSU Archives, the principal source for information and guidance in matters concerning the retention, management and disposition of university records, has significantly expanded its Web site with a new records management main page, where faculty and staff can find answers to their questions and guidance concerning e-mail, transient records and electronic records, along with enhanced information regarding the basics of records management. For questions and comments about electronic records, contact noonan.37@osu.edu. Tamar Chute (chute.6@osu.edu) will continue to answer questions about traditional OSU records retention and disposition.

ORRP ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENT RESEARCHERS

Staff from the Office of Responsible Research Practices will offer office hours to help both graduate and undergraduate student researchers who are preparing Behavioral and Social Sciences Institutional Review Board submissions and exemption requests. These office hours, to be held in 150L Page Hall, are intended to help students and their advisors navigate IRB forms, policies and review procedures. No appointment is necessary. CITI REFRESHER COURSE REMINDER

Continuing education is required every three years for all investigators and key personnel who participate in human subjects research. The Web-based refresher course licensed by the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative is used to meet this requirement. Training for all individuals participating on a project must be current before IRB review of new or continuing research. WORLD WAR II ROADSHOW, THE WAR AIR ON WOSU TV

WOSU TV will air the Columbus World War II Roadshow at 7 p.m. Sunday (9/23), just before the premiere of the highly anticipated Ken Burns film, "The War" airing at 8 p.m. The Roadshow features Central Ohio veterans, their children and grandchildren, and history enthusiasts as they share stories, keepsakes, and souvenirs from World War II. Warren Motts of Motts Military Museum in Groveport hosts this unique gathering at WOSU@COSI. The War, a seven-part documentary tells the story of World War II through personal accounts of men and women from American towns. Read More >
