ENGINEERED EGGSHELLS TO HELP MAKE HYDROGEN FUEL

Engineers at Ohio State have found a way to turn discarded chicken eggshells into an alternative energy resource. The patented process uses eggshells to soak up carbon dioxide from a reaction that produces hydrogen fuel. It also includes a unique method for peeling the collagen-containing membrane from the inside of the shells, so that the collagen can be used commercially. The research was led by L.S. Fan, Distinguished University Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering. Energy experts believe that hydrogen may become an important power source in the future, most notably in the form of fuel cells. Read more >

DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT

The Office of Research is requesting nominations for the 2008 University Distinguished Scholar Award. Each year through the DSA program the university bestows honor and recognition upon six faculty whose scholarly activities, research or other creative works are at the forefront of their respective disciplines. Each award recipient will receive a research grant of $20,000 for the pursuit of further scholarly activity and a $3,000 honorarium. Nominations are due Monday (10/22). Applications packets are available online.

TAIWAN REPRESENTATIVE TO DISCUSS TAIWAN AND THE U.S.

Joseph Wu, Taiwan Representative to the United States and Ohio State Political Science Alum, will discuss “Taiwan and the U.S.: Allies of Interest in Security, Prosperity, and Democracy” from 2-3:30 p.m. Friday (9/28) in the Wexner Center for the Arts Film/Video Theater. No reservations required, but seating is limited. The free event is open to the public and sponsored by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Department of Political Science and Office of International Affairs, and the Institute for Chinese Studies. CLIMATE CHANGE DISCUSSION OCT. 4 AT FAWCETT

With support from the Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs, the Byrd Polar Research Center is offering the final in a series of public discussions about the implications of climate change. Representatives from Honda of America, American Electric Power and the Air Transportation Association will participate in a panel discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday (10/4) in the Fawcett Center, followed by a 45-minute question and answer period facilitated by Andy Keeler, OSU faculty member from the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. CENTER FOR KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT OFFERS ONLINE SEMINAR CALENDAR

For a comprehensive listing of research and educational seminars being held at the OSU Medical Center, visit and bookmark the online medicine calendar. Provided as a service by the Center for Knowledge Management, more than 75 departments and programs across the Medical Center and Health Sciences use the centralized calendar to publish their weekly seminar schedules. Visitors can subscribe to an electronic messaging service to receive an e-mail each afternoon detailing the next day's scheduled events.

GLBT STUDENT SERVICES CELEBRATES NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY

Sile P. Singleton will present her one-person show PAINT! from 7:30-9 p.m. Thursday (10/11) at the Thurber Theater in Drake Union. The performance is free and open to the public. Sile uses a unique blend of personal narrative, social commentary and street savvy readiness to explore and expose the murky complicated margins that inform her ever-changing understanding of trans-self. ENTRIES SOUGHT FOR INTERNATIONAL PHOTO CONTEST

International Affairs is sponsoring an International Photography Contest open to all current Ohio State students, faculty, staff and visiting scholars. Entries must be original and must have been taken outside the United States. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: People, Places and OSU Spirit. The winning photographs will be displayed in a special exhibit in Bricker Hall during November and December. The deadline to enter is Friday (10/19).
