Headline newsENGINEERED EGGSHELLS TO HELP MAKE HYDROGEN FUELEngineers at Ohio State have found a way to turn discarded chicken eggshells
into an alternative energy resource. The patented process uses eggshells to
soak up carbon dioxide from a reaction that produces hydrogen fuel. It also
includes a unique method for peeling the collagen-containing membrane from
the inside of the shells, so that the collagen can be used commercially. The
research was led by L.S. Fan, Distinguished University Professor of chemical
and biomolecular engineering. Energy experts believe that hydrogen may become
an important power source in the future, most notably in the form of fuel cells. Read

DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHTThe Office of Research is requesting nominations for the 2008 University Distinguished
Scholar Award. Each year through the DSA program the university bestows honor
and recognition upon six faculty whose scholarly activities, research or other
creative works are at the forefront of their respective disciplines. Each award
recipient will receive a research grant of $20,000 for the pursuit of further
scholarly activity and a $3,000 honorarium. Nominations are due Monday (10/22).

online. TAIWAN REPRESENTATIVE TO DISCUSS TAIWAN AND THE U.S.Joseph Wu, Taiwan Representative to the United States and Ohio State Political
Science Alum, will discuss “Taiwan and the U.S.: Allies of Interest in
Security, Prosperity, and Democracy” from 2-3:30 p.m. Friday (9/28) in
the Wexner Center for the Arts Film/Video Theater. No reservations required,
but seating is limited. The free event is open to the public and sponsored
by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Department of Political Science
and Office of International Affairs, and the Institute for Chinese Studies.

the Byrd Polar Research Center is offering the final in a series of public
discussions about the implications of climate change. Representatives from
Honda of America, American Electric Power and the Air Transportation Association
will participate in a panel discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday (10/4) in the Fawcett
Center, followed by a 45-minute question and answer period facilitated by Andy
Keeler, OSU faculty member from the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. The
