GREWAL RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD, CHOSEN TO LEAD INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY

Parwinder Grewal, a professor of entomology with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster, has been elected president of the Society of Nematologists. He has attracted international recognition by studying entomopathogenic, or insect-parasitic, nematodes, which are used as biological insecticides against a wide variety of pests in turfgrass, ornamental plants, citrus, strawberries, cranberries and other crops. Director of OSU's Urban Landscape Ecology Program and the Center for Urban Environment and Economic Development, Grewal also has been awarded the 2008 Entomological Society of America Recognition Award in Urban Entomology. ALUMNUS TO SPEAK ABOUT RECENT SPACE SHUTTLE MISSION

OSU College of Veterinary Medicine alumnus Rick Linnehan (DVM 1985), who returned to space for the fourth time last March aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, Mission STS-123, will discuss his experiences at 2 p.m. Friday (9/5) in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Linnehan was selected by NASA in 1992, and has since logged more than 58 days in space as a mission specialist. The March mission garnered special notoriety for Ohio State as Linnehan carried with him in the shuttle the “first bowtie in space,” owned by President E. Gordon Gee. WOSU RECEIVES GRANT TO SUPPORT CREATION OF UNIVERSITY PLACE

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has announced that WOSU Public Media is among the recipients of a Local Service Initiative grant, which will lead to the creation of more university-based programming on WOSU television. LSI grants provide seed money to stations for the development of public media initiatives that strengthen a station's role in its community and increase the public's awareness of the value of its service to the community. The $600,000 grant will support the creation of University Place, an educational project created by WOSU in partnership with public stations at Penn State and Wisconsin. Read more >

LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION STUDY. Volunteers, individuals ages 35-60, are being recruited for a lifestyle intervention study to modify health risk factors. The study will be conducted on the OSU campus during lunch time. Participation in the study will last approximately 12 weeks. Several blood samples and filling out of questionnaires will be required. UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES FACULTY, STAFF FITNESS CHALLENGE

Your Plan for Health in collaboration with the Faculty and Staff Wellness Program has launched "Hit the Road with the Buckeyes" to challenge faculty and staff to increase their physical activity. Teams of five will walk the distance to the Big Ten away games on the 2008 football schedule. Teams can convert various physical activities into miles. Teams that go the distance can qualify for one of four tiers of achievement - each having its own random prize drawing. Prizes include a lunch with Coach Jim Tressel and one-year gym membership; a treadmill, elliptical or recumbent bike; Panera Bread catered lunch and gift card bundle; and an OSU basket. Read more >

OSU TO HOST OHIO AGRICULTURAL LAW SYMPOSIUM SEPT. 19

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Paul Pfeifer will address the first Ohio Agricultural Law Symposium to be held at OSU’s Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center on Friday (9/19). The event is a joint legal education project between OSU Extension’s Agricultural and Resource Law Program and the Ohio State Bar Association. Topics include legal issues facing today’s agriculture, legal issues at the Ohio Department of Agriculture, and retirement tax planning. A limited number of student scholarships to attend the symposium at no cost are available through OSU’s Paul L. Wright Chair Fund in Agricultural Law. Registration information is available online. CAMPUS GREEN FAIR SET FOR SEPT. 9 IN LEARNING GARDENS

Transportation and Parking Services and the Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens are hosting a Green Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday (9/10) in the Learning Gardens to promote transportation, parking and commuter-related sustainability initiatives. Initiatives and participants include Zipcar Car Sharing, MORPC OSU Vanpooling for faculty and staff, B20 Biodiesel powered CABS, Center for Automotive Research, COTA, campus area biking organizations, and Get Green Columbus. CLINICAL, TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE CAREER DEVELOPMENT AWARDS FOR FACULTY

The Ohio State Center for Clinical and Translational Science is offering career development awards to eligible OSU faculty and other researchers. This program will fund scientists in two primary areas: patient-oriented and translational research. Candidates must possess a doctoral degree. The program seeks to reward a track record of academic success and clear potential for the future. Selection preference will be given to junior faculty, but others including postdoctoral trainees, research scientists and clinical fellows may also be eligible. SCHOOL OF MUSIC HOSTS PIANO SALE SEPT. 13

For the past year, the School of Music has had the benefit of using a number of new Yamaha pianos and Clavinova digital pianos provided by the Yamaha institutional loan program, which provides instruments to OSU and other institutions throughout the year. After one year, the pianos are made available for public purchase. Arrange for a private appointment to view pianos before the sale to the general public by calling 292-3773, or attend the sale for the general public from noon-5 p.m. Saturday (9/13) at the School of Music.

CHADWICK ARBORETUM PLANT SALE TODAY, SEPT. 5

The OSU Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens Fall Plant Sale is set for 7 a.m.-7 p.m. today (9/4) and Friday (9/5) in the turnaround drive in front of Howlett Hall. Garden store items are priced for clearance and include mums, native trees, pansies, potted containers, and fall blooming perennials. The OSU Hearing Professionals are hosting an event from Monday (9/22)-Friday (9/26) with complimentary demonstrations of new hearing aid technology and hearing screening.
