Ohio State students begin year with community service day

Approximately 1,500 new and returning Ohio State students will be fanning out to dozens of sites across Columbus today (9/23) to perform community service projects as part of the university’s Community Commitment event. It is one of the largest single-day community service projects on a college campus in the nation. Students are being encouraged to be “access ambassadors” and will be ready to talk to younger students they encounter at their service sites about what it’s like to go to college. Read more >

RECURRENT ABDOMINAL PAIN STUDY. Youth ages 7-18 with recurrent abdominal pain/stomach aches may be eligible for treatment through research studies at Nationwide Childrens Hospital. Cheryl Achterberg leads Education and Human Ecology

 Cheryl Achterberg, one of today's outstanding scholars in nutritional development, is the dean of Ohio State's College of Education and Human Ecology. She was appointed Tuesday (7/1). Achterberg also is a tenured professor in the Department of Human Nutrition. She previously was at Iowa State University, where she was the inaugural dean of the College of Human Sciences. Prior to joining the Iowa State faculty in 2005, Achterberg was on the faculty of The Pennsylvania State University, where she rose through the professional ranks, attaining tenure in 1991 and the rank of full professor in 1996. Eye on Alumni airs Sept. 25 on Big Ten Network

Eye on Alumni, a studio-based interview program highlighting some of Ohio State’s most prominent alumnus, will air on the Big Ten Network at 5 p.m. Thursday (9/25). The show features day-in-the-life video packages and includes web and video questions from fellow alumni. Featured in this episode are Ted Beattie, president and CEO of the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and Jeff Swanagan, current executive director of the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. Research Support Expo Oct. 2

All faculty, research scientists and individuals eligible to serve as principal investigators are invited to attend the Research Support Expo at 2 p.m. Thursday (10/2) at the Blackwell Inn and Conference Center. Apply for Staff Career Development Grants by Oct. 27

Staff Career Development Grants of up to $500 each are awarded annually to offset education and training costs needed to further staff career goals and professional development. The grant can be used for activities that occur during calendar year 2009. You must be a regular full-time or part-time staff member and have at least two years of continuous employment with OSU by Thursday (1/1/09). Apply by Monday (10/27). Applications are available at hr.osu.edu/forms/careerdevgrt.pdf. The grants are funded through contributions to the Campus Campaign's Staff Career Development Fund and administered by Human Resources.

OSU's wetlands to host SwampFest Sept. 25

Plan to join President E. Gordon Gee at OSU's Olentangy River Wetland Research Park, 352 W. Dodridge St., to celebrate its designation as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance at SwampFest 2008, from 5-10 p.m. Thursday (9/25). The public is invited. CABS buses will be running from the RPAC to Swampfest at 4:20, 4:50 and 5:20 p.m. Enjoy the Picnic at the Swamp, an outdoor lecture on wetlands of the world, and bluegrass and rock bands all evening. Geriatrics and Gerontology offers curriculum materials in aging

In keeping with the vision of the university to advance the well-being of the people of Ohio and the global community through the creation and dissemination of knowledge, the OSU Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology is proposing to provide curriculum materials in aging for integration into current and new courses across campus. The pre-packaged teaching tools would be made available to OSU faculty through an accessible online tool kit and updated regularly at no charge. Continuing Education Noncredit Programs’ fall quarter Certified Manager Program Planning and Organizing course begins Tuesday (9/30) and will meet from 6-9:30 p.m. one day per week for eight weeks in Mount Hall on West Campus.
