Ohio State's Ukrainian Democracy Program critical in wake of Russian surge

As Russia flexes military muscle and exerts resolute political pressure on former member states of its empire, fears are surging over the strategically important Ukraine. Could it be the next target after Georgia? That anxiety is of major significance to a program designed to bolster democracy in the Ukraine, which will be run through Ohio State. OSU has signed a new $4 million, three-year contract to operate the United States Agency on International Development -funded Parliamentary Development Project in the Ukraine, the world's longest-running, sustained effort to promote democracy. School of PAES, TELR to host distance learning conference

The School of Physical Activity and Educational Services (College of Education and Human Ecology) and TELR will host the second annual Distance Learning Conference, The Future of Distance Education in Ohio from 8:30 a.m.-noon Friday (10/24). Keynote speaker is Kate Carey, executive director, Ohio Learning Network. Participants may choose one of three break-out workshops on topics related to distance learning. RECURRENT ABDOMINAL PAIN STUDY. Youth ages 7-18 with recurrent abdominal pain/stomach aches may be eligible for treatment through research studies at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Show and Tell: Capturing Service-Learning in Digital Stories

Why tell digital stories about service-learning? How do you create them? The Service-Learning Initiative and the Digital Union will answer these questions and show examples of digital service stories during Show and Tell: Capturing Service-Learning in Digital Stories, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday (10/2) in the Learning Collaboration Studio, Science/Engineering Library. Register online by Tuesday (9/30). Registration limited to 30 participants.

Libraries presents First Person Graphic reading, discussion series

OSU Libraries is presenting a four-part reading and discussion series: First Person Graphic - further explorations in the graphic novel, facilitated by Jared Gardner, OSU professor of English and editor of a popular online review journal devoted to the graphic novel called guttergeek. The discussions will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. on alternate Monday evenings beginning Monday (10/6) in the seminar room adjacent to the Cartoon Research Library, Wexner Center for the Arts. Graduate student research funds available

The Graduate School’s Alumni Grants for Graduate Research and Scholarship Program provides up to $2,000 to support the research and scholarship of doctoral or MFA candidates in a terminal degree program for their dissertations or theses. AGGRS awards of up to $2,000 are available. The deadline for Fall Quarter 2008 competition is Friday (10/10). The OSU College of Medicine AHEC office is hosting a two-day workshop at the University Plaza Conference Center from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tuesday (10/14) and Wednesday (10/15). Featured speaker is Sue Stableford, an expert in the health literacy and plain language field. Learn about Health Literacy: A Quality & Patient Safety Imperative on day one, and Health Literacy and Chronic Disease Management on day two. Dump and run OSU yard sale Sept. 26

Students For Recycling is hosting the fifth annual Dump and Run Yard Sale from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday (9/26) at Jesse Owens North Rec Center. The Dump and Run program provides the OSU and local community with low-cost post-consumer goods, and the opportunity to reuse items and reduce our impact on the earth. New process for registering radiology research visits

Beginning Wednesday (10/1), a new process for registering radiology research visits within the OSU Health System will begin. The change will help ensure patient safety and proper billing by identifying the patient and the reason for the visit in the hospital system. All research visits involving radiology services need to be scheduled by calling Central Radiology Scheduling at 293-4333. If it is not possible to schedule radiology research visits ahead of time the Research Participant Registration form must be completed and sent with the participant to registration.
