OSU project will boost women faculty in sciences
Ohio State will use federal funding to help female faculty advance in the sciences by launching a five-year initiative to change academic departmental culture in disciplines in which women are underrepresented on the faculty. Joan Herbers, professor of evolution, ecology and organismal biology and principal investigator of the grant, will lead a program called Project CEOS, or Comprehensive Equity at Ohio State. The initiative, funded by a $3.6 million grant from the National Science Foundation, is intended to increase the presence and success of women at all faculty ranks and in faculty leadership positions across the STEM disciplines: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. CNN to broadcast presidential debate focus groups from Geology Library
OSU's Orton Memorial Library of Geology will be on national stage as CNN broadcasts live from the site during the presidential and vice presidential debates, scheduled for 9-10:30 p.m. Friday (9/26), Thursday (10/2), Tuesday (10/7) and Wednesday (10/15). CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien will interview 30 "persuadable" voters from the Columbus area at the library immediately before and after the debates. During the debates, the voters' reactions will be displayed as a graphic on the screen.
In order to accommodate the broadcast, the Geology Library will be closed each of the four days. It will close at 5 p.m. today (9/25); only the library's circulation area will be open Friday (9/26), so patrons can pick up or return materials. The Geology Library will be closed this Saturday and Sunday. Access to Hagerty Drive will be limited on Friday (9/26) while large trucks park to prepare for the CNN broadcast and also a Welcome Week Concert, set for 4:30-10 p.m. Sunday (9/28) on the South Oval.
