Diesel exhaust linked to cancer development via new blood vessel growth

 Scientists here are the first to demonstrate that the link between diesel fume exposure and cancer lies in the ability of diesel exhaust to induce the growth of new blood vessels that serve as a food supply for solid tumors. Exposure to diesel exhaust for just a short time period of two months could give even normal tissue the potential to develop a tumor, concluded Qinghua Sun, OSU assistant professor of environmental health sciences and senior author of the study. Labor Day holiday reminder; regular hours resume Sept. 8

The university will recognize the Labor Day holiday on Monday (9/7). Offices will be closed. Summer quarter hours end and the university returns to regular hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. when offices open on Tuesday (9/8).

OSC deploys supercomputer expansion to boost research into biosciences, other areas of focus

On Monday (8/31), the Ohio Supercomputer Center deployed a much anticipated $4 million expansion to its flagship system, providing further computational support to the state’s economic development aspirations in research and innovation. Located on west campus, the OSC provides Ohio industries and universities, including Ohio State, with a reliable high performance computing and networking infrastructure. Sept. 9: Open forum to introduce candidate for director of University Libraries

The search committee for the director of University Libraries will host an open forum to introduce faculty, staff and students to Colleen Cook, a candidate for the position, from 3:30-4:45 p.m. Wednesday (9/9) in 165 Thompson Library. Sept. 9: Learn about OSU Master Space Plan and Medical Center’s expansion plans

Faculty and staff are invited to learn about the new comprehensive university master space plan called One Ohio State Framework and how it aligns with the Medical Center expansion plans, called ProjectONE, from 11 a.m.-noon Wednesday (9/9) in the West Reading Room of the Thompson Library (room 260). Join senior administrators from the Medical Center and the university for the presentation, and learn about the university’s plans and view the Medical Center’s new critical care tower, cancer hospital and new patient and visitor amenities planned for the buildings. Best Fans in the Land: Help break recycling record

 Join fellow Buckeyes, including Brutus, and continue Ohio State’s tailgate recycling program at each home football game. Put all recyclables (paper, plastic, aluminum, glass, cardboard) in the special white-with-red bags distributed at the tailgate lots. Deposit the bag in the red dumpsters on the way out or leave them at the site for easy collection. Last year, tailgate recycling exceeded 13 tons. Help break that record this year. Center for Clinical and Translational Science RFA pilot studies program

Ohio State's Center for Clinical and Translational Science is now accepting applications for pilot project funding. The purpose of this funding mechanism is to encourage new multidisciplinary research groups to address integrated solutions to complex clinical and translational problems. Digital Union offers technology tutorials Sept. 14-18

The Digital Union invites OSU faculty, staff and students to take part in Tech Two-A-Days, a series of technology tutorials featuring 10 workshops in five days from Monday (9/14)-Friday (9/18). Learn the latest tech tools for teaching, learning and research at sessions on video techniques, Google docs, SMART interactive whiteboards, videoconferencing, social networking and more. Sept. 24: JamesCare for Life discussion on importance of clinical trials
