Spotlight on ... Department of Plant Pathology

OSU's Department of Plant Pathology is the sole academic unit dedicated to plant health and agricultural microbiology in Ohio's higher education system. With faculty in both Columbus and at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster, the department addresses strategic areas in the study of plant disease, plant-microbe interactions, and disease management. The discipline of plant pathology can be traced back to the mid 1800s, when potato late blight disease devastated Ireland's potato crops – historically known as the Irish potato famine. Today, plant pathology encompasses global challenges in international food security, sustainable agriculture, biobased technologies, and the environment. Research, Extension and teaching programs reach audiences in Ohio and across the world.
